Auditor Coming to Tbilisi. From USA

2009-06-08 20:38

2985.jpegThe Georgian Opposition is going to celebrate its anniversary, 2 month from the standoff beginning, by a new wave of protests: in front of the Parliament a demonstration will be held, then a peaceful march towards the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Main Procuracy. The opposition leaders, often criticized for their «indecision», intend to demonstrate to Vice State Secretary of the US for Europe and Eurasia Philip Gordon the grade of their dissatisfaction with the president. Saakashvili committed to attack and warned his opponents on possible consequences.

The opposition leaders do not hide their expectations to receive support from the West. Nino Burjanadze stated it aloud during her meeting with the special representative of the European Union Peter Semneby. She invited the European Union to be more active with regard to Georgia.

Before that, on 7 June, the leader of the «Georgian Way» party Salome Zurabishvili said that it is very important to fulfil a large-scale peaceful operation, as before the arrival of the Vice State Secretary of the US for Europe and Eurasia Philip Gordon the Georgian community must show «a high charge of protest against Saakashvili and his politics».

Tomorrow Philip Gordon is starting his political tour of Transcaucasia and will arrive in Tbilisi on 11 June. It is exactly on 9 June that the opposition is planning to hold its «peaceful attack» of Saakashvili. Will the opposition members be able to beat their own record, when on 26 May, on the Georgia Independence Day, about one hundred thousand people gathered? At any rate, now many people in Tbilisi state a slow but steady reduction in the protest charge. Under the pressure of Tbilisi citizens, tired of the permanent traffic jams in the city streets, the oppositionists had to free Liberty Square from their cage boxes. Besides, it is June, time of holidays and family vacations. Few of the capital citizens remain indoors during these hot summer days.

Meanwhile, the president does not hide his irritation with the implacability of his opponents any longer. For two months Saakashvili has shown composure and even indifference, but a few days ago he missed his footing and threatened to the oppositionists. Not with batons, rubber bullets or tear gas. Such a turn would mean a mortal verdict to the authorities. In his inimitable manner Mikhail Nikolaevich reminded about the flawed record of his former companions. He said that time could not cancel their «feats».

On 6 June Mikhail Saakashvili warned his opponents about this during his meeting with the population at the tea production factory of Martvili (Western Georgia). «Let nobody of the opponents who used to rule the country think that the law will forgive them for something. If the law proves their unlawfulness, the state will not give up in anything», GHN cites Mikhail Saakashvili. Saakashvili's attack was directed first of all at the leader of the «Democratic Movement - United Georgia» party Nino Burjanadze and at the leader of the «Movement for Fair Georgia» Zurab Nogaideli.

Thus, according to Saakashvili, the ex Premier Zurab Nogaideli will have to be liable for the illegal acquisition of financial means while in command. «Now Nogaideli has quite much money and, unfortunately, most of these funds were obtained by him during the period of Saakashvili's presidency. Nogaideli took advantage of his position and now he is trying to blackmail the authorities with that money», said the president noting that it was his mistake.
