Milestone Compromise or Anticrisis Gambit?2009-06-10 17:46
Today the Georgian opposition has a kind of anniversary. They will celebrate two months of their standoff by a march and by picketing the Ministry of Internal affairs building. During this period the date of Saakashvili's hypothetical resignation has been postponed several times. As for him, he is not going to leave and claims again that he does not intend to hold any elections. But what anniversary can do without any surprises? Unexpectedly Saakashvili proposed a meeting to the leader of the United Opposition Levan Gachechiladze.
Either due to the oppositionists' anniversary, or because of the US Vice State Secretary for Europe and Eurasia Philip Gordon's visit to Tbilisi, today the Georgian President Mikhail Nikolaevich expressed his desire to meet Levan Gachechiladze. This is stated by VZGLIAD as referred to the Tbilisi newspaper «Alia». According to this title, so far the opposition has decided to decline this proposal. Levan Gachechiladze did not exclude that his negotiations with Mikhail Saakashvili can take place and will «be transparent».
The Georgian political analysts refrain from comments, as for now no one has reliable information: the President Staff does not confirm or deny the Alia message. What is surely known is the expected appearance of a "huge social & political movement" on the political arena of the country. Levan Gachechiladze declared this the other day, adding that it will be a big step against Mikhail Saakashvili.
According to the United Opposition leader, apart from particular actions they need a well-structured power that would assume responsibility for the ongoing processes. Levan Gachechiladze invoked the community to enter this organization. Besides, the Gachechiladze brothers Levan and Georgy (the singer Utsnobi), as well as the poet David Magradze are creating a «resistance movement» that will undertake liability for street activities. At the same time a certain decrease in the protest wave is apparent.
Protests reached their peak on 26 May: then the opposition gathered about one hundred thousand followers. But as the Saakashvili adversaries, who are really many in Georgia, have not seen any resolute actions of the powers opposing the president and no concrete plan of further actions, fewer and fewer people go to manifestations. The opposition leaders are not even trying to contest it.
According to GHN, Levan Gachechiladze even made such a declaration: «I do not hide it and I admit that after the 26 May the protest intensity is going down, but there is nothing alarming in it. Sometimes the intensity is high, sometimes low, the main thing is that every day, even when the people are relatively few, we will go on staying here». At the same time he acknowledges the importance of the planned visit of Philip Gordon, a US official, to Tbilisi, and encourages the opposition to prepare to it properly.
At the same time, according to Civil.Ge, Gachechiladze could not but note that European diplomats occupy another position already: «Now they are interested in Georgia, not Saakashvili, they are already interested in the future of our country, not in the presence of a political police in this country. This is written on their faces».
However, the issue is not about the position of diplomats or «friends from the West». Though, as the Georgian mass media say, the Chairman of the Georgian Parliament Committee for the Matters of European Integration David Darchiashvili considers the US Vice State Secretary's arrival in the country «open support of Georgia».
