Georgian Confrontation Siesta2009-07-06 18:03
Though the opposition said proudly that it was not going to have any vacation, by the middle of summer, when the thermometer stem shoots up to forty, the protest charge falls as swiftly. After publishing the records of Levan Gachechiladze and David Gamkrelidze's meeting with the ex minister of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Kakha Targamadze some oppositionists left the cage cameras. They still remain in the center of Tbilisi, either like a silent reproach to the fruitless confrontation or in expectation of its new round. Despite there are still several large events planned for the future, it is already clear: the confrontation is to be continued in autumn.
If some opposition leaders still cannot put up with the fact that the three-month confrontation did not bring any tangible results, others do not conceal their plans for the coming autumn: they would like to enter their decisive battle with the authorities. Will it be determinant? But the point is: it has ended in a draw between the authorities and the opposition. So today, says Interfax, the leader of the «Movement for Fair Georgia» opposition party, ex Premier of Georgia Zurab Nogaideli told the journalists: «It is quite evident that at this stage no actions of protest against the authorities yield any results, and it is not worth supporting the protest wave in an artificial manner. It is much better to wait for autumn and start another
offensive with renewed vigour».
However, Nogaideli's party was not in the forefront of the opposition movement. The party joined the street actions of protest later than all the rest. And Nogaideli himself hesitated for a long time if he should participated in the street manifestations or not. Having finally said «yes», Zurab Nogaideli and his party withdrew from opposition meetings just a few days later. As the Versia, a Tbilisi newspaper, said, the reason was Zurab Nogaideli's personal disapproval of some opposition party leaders. He decided to wait.
So he has finally got it. In the end the opposition decided to receive Nogaideli's party into the fold. The Georgian mass media had stated that both Russia and the USA were ready to carry on a dialog with Nogaideli's team featuring the former political elite. In the meantime Nogaideli presented his own economical program, an army reformation project and some mechanisms of interaction with Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
Now the ex Premier has been among the first to announce a summer timeout. Is this decision justified? For example, today the ex President of Georgia Edward Shevardnadze said that the political and economical situation in the country is «disastrous», writes the VZGLYAD newspaper. «The life is not fine, Georgia is experiencing a political and economical crisis», he said. The ex President noted that the situation can lead to «civil confrontation» and spoke in favour of elections. According to him, he does not remember such strong opposition in the whole history of Georgia.
