  • Georgian wine back to Russia? 2010-03-11 22:41 Hardly is there anyone who doubts abnormality of Russian-Georgian relations. The events of 2008 when two neighboring states turned into enemies for the first time in their history is simply beyond any reasonable explanation. Current developments in bilateral relations of two states are incomprehensible either – at least as far as return of Georgian produce to the Russian market is concerned.
  • Lobio won’t buy lobby 2010-03-10 17:17 Georgia has hired new lobbying firms in the USA. Without them Mikheil Saakashvili’s meetings with influential politicians like Barack Obama are no more possible. It seems the Georgian leader has communication problems not only with Russian leaders to whom he either sends relatives or his Armenian counterpart.
  • Taking up Nogaideli’s path 2010-03-04 13:37 Today Nino Burdzhanadze is calling on her Moscow friends she went to Moscow State Institute of International Relations with. The Ex Speaker repeated the exploit of ex PM Zurab Nogaideli who managed to settle relations with Moscow politicians unafraid to be accused of high treason last year. In the meantime there are suspicions Mikheil Saakashvili has secret ties with Moscow.
  • Khloponin: three problems and four clusters 2010-03-01 23:30 North Caucasus Presidential Envoy, Vice PM Alexander Khloponin continues familiarizing himself with the region he has taken charge of. • Tbilisi in search of money 2010-02-27 22:34 One of the theses of yesterday’s speech delivered by President of Georgia Mikhail Saakashvili in the parliament goes as follows: the emigrants are returning to Georgia. The statement sounds doubtful, considering the fact that the statistics on migration is rather disputable. It is not only the Georgian experts that are talking about it; the Statistics Department does not provide any data as well. The president’s statement rather resembles an auto-training session. One of these days, the officials expressed hope to get billions of investments from their former fellow countrymen. As to Mikhail Nikolaevitch, he stated that the authorities are going to announce discounts on real estate property in order to attract the capital of the Georgian expatriate community. So far, the representatives of the construction companies do not say anything about the boom of accommodations acquisition by the former fellow countrymen.

Realists and Dreamers of the Opposition

2009-07-13 23:16

If Irakly Alasania speaks of changes in the authorities' mood and of a possibility of «real dialog», the «National Forum» that is going to enter the alliance in the near future is urging to create «common headquarters» and start an act of rebellion.

This was declared by one of the forum leaders Gubaz Sanikidze. According to him, it is the headquarters that must resolve all issues arising during the protest events, informs GHN.

Sanikidze has also asked his opposition colleagues to work more actively with the regions. «This government has stuck in the gizzard of not only Tbilisi but of the whole Georgia, and we must start organizing a general act of rebellion», he said. The oppositionist is sure that soon great events will start happening. «One big action is better than ten senseless ones», emphasized Sanikidze.

Despite obvious dissimilarity in some matters, oppositionists do not lose their hope for unification. According to the Georgian radio station Kommersant, Alasania said that agreement on his party continuing its activity in coordination with other alliance members has almost been reached. At the same time Alasania hopes to see the representative of the Parliament minority Giya Tsagareishvili in his party. However, he says that so far no consultations are held on this issue. One of the ways out of the crisis, noted Alasania, is to reach an agreement between the government and the opposition, however morbid this process could be.

«First of all we are speaking of creating a normal election environment. Second: we need editorial liberty of all mass media, in the first place of «Obshchestvenny Veshchatel». Third and most important: dissociation of law enforcement bodies from politics-related and election processes. A civil mechanism of control over force structures must be developed. According to Alasania, Levan Gachechiladze and the «National Forum» are ready for the dialog. Other forces «must make a decision and define their position themselves».

However, Nino Burdjanadze, who, according to some foreign experts, is also one of the main competitors of Saakashvili and is acceptable both for Moscow and Washington, has just left for a transatlantic visit. She has the reputation of a radical and denies any dialog with the authorities.

So three months later than the political confrontation the situation in the political arena of Georgia is as vague as in early April.
