Joseph Biden: “three pillars” for Georgia2009-07-24 23:33
"Security, economy and democracy" - these were the main points of discussion during the US Vice President Joseph Biden's visit to Georgia. Barack Obama's assistant has counterweighed his boss's friendly attitude towards Russia with several statements that were so pleasant for the Georgians' ears. Saakashvili was touched. The only figure missing was the boy to exclaim: "Look, the emperor has no clothes!"
According to Frans Press, Biden has highlighted the key points of his visit: it is concern about safety, economy development and healthy democracy. However, he spoke about economy least of all. "Today, Georgia is receiving the greatest American help per capita in the world, and we are going to continue providing support", - "the rich uncle" promised in his speech delivered in the Georgian parliament. According to Biden, details of this assistance are given in the Stratagic Partnership Charter signed between the two countries in Washington on January, 9.
The vice president reminded that a year ago, the Americans, on seeing the ruins and refugees, promised to lead the country out of the post-war crisis. At that point, a decision was made to allocate one billion dollars to Georgia. However, it was not necessary to remind Biden of the fact. Saakashvili knows perfectly whose material assistance allowed the initiator of the war to retain presidency. It was not without reason that Mikhail Nikolaevitch tied the order around "his friend Joe's" neck with trembling hands.
As to Saakashvili, he has not earned any reward so far. Not only did he set up a massacre in Tskhinval that had cast shadow on the American administration but also brought his country to the national disobedience campaign with colorful ward-cages erected in the center of the city. All these errors should be urgently eliminated, and the country should be headed towards the well-developed and healthy democracy, which seems to be the American leaders' forte: they have come to the Caucasus under the slogan of "Let us endow the people with democracy". But they have got a show instead of democracy.
Thus, the US vice president had to call the Georgian authorities to account. "The issues mentioned by President Mikhail Saakashvili in his speech (during the discussion in parliament - ed.) do not reflect the whole scope of the future work. You are to obtain balance between all branches of power; the media should become independent, providing true information to the people. Real democracy is possible only with the independent court in place, when political processes are carried out in parliament instead of the streets", - Biden stated in his speech delivered in parliament. At this point, the journalists seemed to have a déjà vu, for these were exactly the same worlds that had been said the day before in Ukraine.
However, the situation required varying this statement. Thus, Georgia needs democracy for mending its relationship with Sukhum and Tskhinval, for, according to Biden, only a prosperous and democratic Georgia is able to show Abkhazia and South Ossetia that they can live side by side under one roof. "The blooming Georgia will help its sons to realize their dream. Solidarity is power", - Biden underlined. The government instantly rushed to fulfill the given instructions. The delegates and officials announced that they were going to reach out and listen to the people's direct complaints.
