America recognized Abkhazia and South Ossetia – so far, as a PR-community2009-08-14 15:24
Having obtained independence after the August war a year ago, Abkhazia and South Ossetia decided to adjust their image in the international arena. The main point is that the role of image-makers will be performed by the PR experts from the USA, which authorities promise never to recognize new geopolitical realities in the South Caucasus. Well, the Caucasian policy seems to be rather a delicate matter.
The work of the Russia-NATO Council was suspended last year because Russia recognized the independence of the two republics. As the politicians admit, the issue of "territorial integrity" of Georgia remains the "sticking point" in relationship between Moscow and Washington, who have pressed the "reload" button. It is the White House, upon which President of Georgia Mikhail Saakashvili is putting all his hopes.
The Georgian leader seems to be lacking friends who would help him make another step towards his dearest wish, that is, towards regaining Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Incredible as it may seem, it is the American PR experts who are going to improve the image of these Caucasian republics that are not yet recognized by the majority of the Western countries, as the Commersant newspaper reports. For this purpose, Abkhazia and South Ossetia have concluded a contract with Saylor Company, an American PR-agency.
The fact of signing contracts with South Ossetia and Abkhazia was reported by head of Saylor Company Mark Seylor, who had worked as editor-in-chief for The Los Angeles Times. On the part of Abkhazia, the document was signed by Christian Bjania, the official representative of President Sergey Bagapsh for communications with the media. The South-Ossetian party was represented at the negotiations by the President Eduard Kokoity's Commissioner for Human Rights David Sanakoev. According to Rosbalt, which is referring to Reuters, Commissioner for Human Rights in South Ossetia David Sanakoev said: "Our country has signed a contract with Saylor Company so that the world knew the truth about us".
The South-Ossetian ombudsman explained that the authorities of the republics, whose independence of Georgia has been so far recognized only by the RF and Nicaragua, consider the opinion that was formed by the West after the August 2008 conflict to be wrong. In the opinion of the ombudsman, it was the Georgian propaganda that played its role in creating a negative image of the republic. According to Lenta.ru, the South-Ossetian and Abkhazian authorities decided to resist the propaganda via the hired PR experts.
The document was signed on June, 22. "However, at that moment we had no clear idea of the format of our work, - Aid to the president of Abkhazia Christian Bjania, who has signed the contract on the part of Abkhazia, explained to Vedomosti. - The company analysts have been studying the situation in the republic, and now our cooperation has assumed a practical aspect".
"We saw the resonance produced by information support of the Georgian aggression, so the world's opinion was formed within the first days immediately after the war, and this is a wrong opinion", - Sanakoev told Reuters. In his turn, Bjania stated that the Georgians "have obviously improved in the matters of disinformation". "Our purpose is to break the stereotypes of the West that have been formed due to the Georgian propagandistic machine", - he underlined. And now Abkhazia wishes to make it clear to the world that it is an independent country which is going to build a democratic state, providing free and honest elections and defending ethnic minorities. Tskhinval intends to remind the world community about the last year events and explain the necessity of the presence of the Russian military bases in its territory.
