Opposition on siesta

2009-09-04 17:59

3867.jpegThe autumn storm promised by the Georgian opposition may fail. A velvet September is more probable instead. The Georgian opposition decided to stop permanent rallies joining elaboration of the country's election code. Nomination of opposition candidates for Tbilisi Mayor position is now actively discussed. Does this mean the political crisis is over? Are the opposition leaders that openly admit their presidential ambitions content with the municipal portfolios?

The Georgian opposition decided to stop permanent rallying, VZGLYAD correspondent reports from Tbilisi. As stated by Kakha Kukava of the Conservative party on Friday the updated plans of the Georgian opposition on continuation of struggle against President Mikheil Saakashvili's regime would be announced next week. However it is already known the actions will be organized if necessary. Kakha Kukava said that the release of over 80 political prisoners was a top priority at the first stage.

Earlier the Georgian opposition promised to announce its plans in September. Several party leaders said so at one time. United Georgia Secretary General Eka Beselia stated "very active discussion of our plans is underway now". The Conservative Party of Georgia informed no decision had been taken on the form, start and schedule of the protest actions yet underlining the autumn would be stormy.

Democratic Movement - United Georgia leader, ex Speaker of Parliament Nino Burdzhanadze told the journalists the opposition would continue to act as it was necessary to achieve radical and notable changes in the country and the change of power. Burdzhanadze promised to promulgate serious incriminations against President Mikheil Saakashvili and members of his government stating she "will fight as long as she is alive until she is physically destroyed".

September has already begun but the opposition's activity is scarce. It looks like during the summer timeout the opposition had announced the authorities managed to stabilize their positions. Saakashvili put Bacho Akhalaya, an odious teammate, at the head of the Defense Ministry. The opposition was openly critical of the new appointment. But Saakashvili repeatedly showed his decisions were not subject to discussion.

Besides there are achievements of the Georgian leaders in a different direction: part of the opposition movements actively discusses a number of issues with the ruling team. In August a meeting between the opposition and the power authorities took place resulting in the agreement to release oppositionists that had been sent to jail for their political views. Though not all detainees are released - far from it - the opposition is ready to pursue the dialogue with the authorities on the issue.

Yesterday Irakli Alasania's Our Georgia-Free Democrats party joined the activity of the working group that since March had been preparing the Election Code reform assisted by the US National Democratic Institute. Earlier the oppositionists rejected such kind of collaboration with the ruling team. "We have come to learn the situation in this group, the variety of positions, the issues they agree and disagree on. We will express our opinion later", - Zurab Abashidze told the journalists before going to the meeting. He also specified he had suggestions on "everything connected with the elections", - reports.
