Former speaker’s country house auctioned: who is going to take up the lot?2009-09-09 17:37
The future of the disputed property of the leader of the oppositional Democratic Movement - United Georgia party seems to be defined. The auction took place on October, 7. The only question is who would like to become the owner of the lot symbolizing political squabbles and intrigues?
"The country house was put up for sale by Regional Center (Tax Inspection) of the Revenue Service of the Georgian Ministry of Finance. The initial price for the country house located in the village of Tskhneti (suburbs of Tbilisi), including 615 square meters of buildings and constructions and a plot of 31 696 square meters makes up 11 494 249 laris (about 6,76 mln. US dollars)", - Interfax was told by the Revenue Service of the Ministry of Finance.
According to the rules, a person wishing to take part in the auction should first pass 2 percents of the initial price of the property to be acquired to the State Treasury deposit account. Besides, after the auction the buyer must immediately pay no less than 50 percent of the acquired property, while the rest is paid for within 14 calendar days.
The mentioned country house has got a story of its own. It was Mikhail Saakashvili who practically gave it to Nino Anzorovna as a gift in 2008 on occasion of his "loyal associate's" decision to quit politics. The "daughter of revolution" assured that she was not going to be engaged in politics any longer and that she wanted to be only a human rights defender and be engaged in developing democracy in the country. Saakashvili issued an order to transfer the exclusive land plot to Burjanadze for a symbolic price of 1 lari (about 0,6 dollars).
Now this present has stuck in Nino Anzorovna's gizzard. At first, the court obliged Burjanadze to pay out the debt of 1,25 million laris (about 760 thousand dollars) to the state for owning the country house in Tskhneti. After Nino Anzorovna returned to politics as an oppositional activist the financial control authorities started to show interest in the country house.
The trial that was held delivered a judgment that the price of the country house makes up 12 million laris (about 7 million dollars) and recognized as valid the demand of the Revenue Service of Ministry of Finance to pay out 1,25 million laris to the state as a tax for owning such property, RIA Novosti reports. Still, Nino Anzorovna is sure that the court's decision has got nothing to do with Themis; this is just the political punishment of the president's opponents.
It should also be noted that Nino Burdjanadze filed a lawsuit against Mikhail Saakashvili as well. However, the city court of Tbilisi did not note the oppositional leader's claim against the president on "the spotted honor, dignity and business reputation", GHN reports. The point is that the president made an accusation against his former revolutionary associate of being allegedly connected with the Russian special services and of her party being sponsored by "disreputable sources".
It is also underlined in the court's decision that Saakashvili's statement was made in the context of political debates and does not imply any responsibility for slander. Meanwhile, Burjanadze is insisting that "the law obliges the president either to prove the absurd accusations "of the Russian liabilities", Russian connections and questionable sponsorship, or to be held liable for slander". Now she threatens to file a lawsuit against the president in Strasbourg Court.
