Tbilisian interpretations of Tagliavini’s report2009-10-02 15:38
It was Georgia who started military actions - in Russia's opinion, this is the main conclusion made by International Commission for Investigation of the reasons of the last year war in the Caucasus. Tbilisi interprets the same conclusion in an absolutely different way, saying that the text of the report comprises no statement that the conflict was initiated by Georgia.
According to the Georgian politicians, Tagliavini's commission underlined that the tragedy in Tskhinval was "the result of a number of armed provocative acts in the region initiated by separatists who were incited by Russia".
This is the essence of comments on the report provided by State Minister of Georgia for Reintegration Temur Yakobashvili and Chairman of Parliament Interim Commission for Territorial Integrity Restoration Shota Malashkhia.
The parliamentary majority considered the report made by the international commission to be identical to the one prepared earlier by the Parliament Interim Commission for Investigation of the August events.
Besides, the delegates assert that the evidence provided to the European Union Commission by the Georgian party will be confirmed in the process of the experts' investigation of the matter, while the Russian data turned out to be inaccurate.
The parliamentarians are satisfied with the fact that Tagliavini's commission did not confirm any genocide over the South-Ossetian people but admitted the fact of ethnic cleansing of the Georgian population in South Ossetia.
The optimistic attitude of the Georgian government representatives contravenes the publications of the foreign media which provide absolutely different information on the contents of the report prepared by the commission that had been established on the initiative of European Union. However, the high-ranking Georgian officials seem to be unaffected by these publications. Any information that is not in line with their version of the report is regarded by them as wrong interpretation.
By the end of Thursday, head of the state Mikhail Saakashvili also expressed his opinion in respect of Tagliavini's report. The statement was made at Maidan (the city square) in the old Tbilisi. This part of the city is currently undergoing reconstruction works in the context of the Old Tbilisi: New Life program.
Saakashvili came out into the square wearing only a shirt though the weather was cold and announced that day to be a lucky day for Tbilisi. According to him, despite the last year war and occupation, intensive construction is carried on in the capital and other cities.
"This is our response to the aggressor. Not only do we continue construction works but we are carrying them on in greater scale", - the president of Georgia stated.
He underlined that Tagliavini's commission was established upon Georgia's strong request. However, Tbilisi had not put much hope on its conclusion, for Russia has got powerful leverages, such as "gas and money".
"But the Europeans are unaccustomed to running away from truth», - Saakashvili stated, saying that the report prepared by the international commission exploded the main myths made up by Russia.
