Georgia in Pursuit of a Lost Dream2009-11-25 22:51
The main dream and the main promise of the Georgian president Mikhail Saakashvili is the entry of his country into the North Atlantic community is unrealizable. And if all this year Georgian experts and analysts just supposed that after the August war Georgia had no whistle for a NATO membership, but now it is more than evident.
An official representative of NATO James Appaturay said that at the ministerial meeting of the NATO in Brussels that will take place on 4 December the issue of Ukraine and Georgia joining the North Atlantic Alliance will not be discussed. He said this during his video press conference for RIA Novosti.
Being an experienced diplomat who obviously studied quite well the peculiarities of the Caucasian character, the General Secretary of the NATO did not destroy the Georgian leaders' dream completely.
He left them a hope for alliance entry. As is known, hope springs eternal in the human breast. According to Appaturay, during the committee sessions the NATO countries' desire to admit Ukraine and Georgia to the alliance will be confirmed, but it can be realized only when the countries are ready for this.
That is, it seems that everybody wants it, but it is difficult to argue with reality. All speeches of Ukraine and Georgia being admitted to the alliance without presenting a «Plan of entry activities» (PEA) also sank into oblivion. At least, none of the high-ranking officials even remembers of this supposition of a special representative of the alliance in the Caucasus and in Central Asia Robert Simmons that was uttered just a few months ago.
Though in those times the representatives of the Tbilisi authorities said to the whole world that due to the «reloading» of their relations with Russia the USA will not renounce to the support of Georgia, so it will become an alliance member anyway, political scientists already started expressing their doubts with that regard. In his interview to BBC a Georgian expert Irakly Adalashvili noticed that Simmons just pronounced some «buzzwords, that the NATO is welcoming the aspiration of Ukraine and Georgia to join the alliance ».
«But nobody says when this will really happen. And after the August war the issue became even more complicated. As for the mood of Georgian citizens, they already feel certain disappointment. And, of course, nobody wants any tension. Moreover, it is required to settle the relations with Russia and with other states as another war cannot be admitted for sure», the expert expressed the people's opinion.
So far the official Tbilisi has not reacted to Appaturay's statement running that in December the issue of Georgia joining the alliance will not even be considered.
It is likely that something traditional will be repeated. Something like a couple of phrases befitting the situation which the Reintegration Minister Temur Jakobashvili modified in some of his speeches. - One of the conditions for normalizing the relations between the NATO and Russia will surely be Georgia», «Georgia will surely become a NATO member, despite all the statements of Russia», «This is not a question to be yielded as this is our choice».
However, in Washington where they know a thing or two on the peculiarities of national politics of young democracies, they gave the Georgian leaders a reason for another advertising step.
