Hammarberg refused to become a puppet2009-12-01 23:41
Georgia has been waiting for Commissioner for Human Rights at the Council of Europe Thomas Hammarberg (see photo) as if he was the Almighty who would save the boys detained in Tskhinval. He was cursed at first; then there was a hysterics about his not being let to South Ossetia. Finally, all the hopes were set upon him. It seemed like Thomas Hammarberg was going to be torn apart should he come back without any positive news. However, he survived the Georgian attack and felt sympathy for the Ossetian families.
This time, Hammarberg was forced to go to Georgia. He received a kind of rebuke from Tbilisi: the Ossetians have stolen our children and you seem not to care a twopence.
In fact, Head of the Georgian Parliament Foreign Relations Committee Akakiy Minashvili accused Thomas Hammarberg of "inactivity, bias and doubtful connections with Russia". He was outraged at "one of the most serious human rights organizations being silent when the children are kept prisoners".
Batono (respected) Akakiy was supported by representative of the parliament opposition Dmitriy Lordkipanidze: "Hammarberg is a person who should be involved in the liberation of the Georgian teenagers considering his status; still, he keeps silent", - he underlined.
It was the Embassy of France that decided to protect the European Commissioner, who is supposed to have enough problems to settle besides Georgia. The Embassy expressed regret that the Georgian delegates allow indulging in personalities in respect of Commissioner of the Council of Europe.
However, Minashvili attained a certain result and Thomas Hammerberg arrived in Georgia. On Sunday, he met with the regional government of Shida Kartli, including Governor Lado Vardzelashvili and the parents of the boys kept in pre-trial detention center in Tskhinval.
At the same time, the Georgian media referring to Chief of Shida Kartli regional police Vladimir Dzhugeli were shouting loud that the European Commissioner arrived in the near-border village of Ergneti in the morning but would not be allowed to South Ossetia. They said that the delegation from Tskhinval arrived at the border but then there came firing and the commissioner left empty-handed.
Simultaneously, the Russian media reported that Tskhinval was awaiting Hammarberg on Monday. And now the moment of truth has come: in due time, Commissioner for Human Rights in Europe came to the capital of South Ossetia, where he refuted all the gossip about his exclusion, having attributed it to the lack of understanding on the part of the Georgian journalists.
Let us remind you that by that moment, Hammarberg was already "well-equipped" with the "arguments" and "an order" from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to bring the Tirdznisi boys back. The journalists forced the guest to give a relevant promise in the airport of Tbilisi immediately upon his arrival.
Before the commissioner's arrival, two youth actions were held in Georgia in defense of the teenagers. On November 26, a meeting was held in Tirdznisi by the fellow students and tutors of Georgiy Romelashvili, Aleko Sabadze, Victor Buchukuri and Levan Khmiadashvili who were detained and suspected of keeping of explosives. The next day, another action was initiated by the students of the Kutaisi State University. Well, one may only try to guess what kind of truth about the Ossetians and tolerance they were taught by initiators of the action.
