Tbilisi in search of a new strategy

2009-12-15 18:52

4863.jpegThe Georgian authorities started developing a new strategy in respect of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Not because the ruling regime was suddenly touched by the feeling of remorse for what was done in August 2008. Or, that it was suddenly struck by an idea that its policy in respect of the nearest neighbors leads to a deadlock. It's just that the world community is getting free from the propaganda bonds and is capable of giving an adequate estimate of the situation in the South Caucasus, which has become possible due to Taglyavini's report. The U.S. are also changing the focus of their policy in the region.

As was stated by State Minister for Reintegration Temur Yakobashvili, several months ago the government started working on the strategy concerning the relations of the Georgian authorities and the people of the Abkhaz and South-Ossetian territories, as well as the issues of their education, cultural development and people's diplomacy. It was promised that the final version of the strategy will be ready by the end of the year. As was reported, the spokesmen of the countries of European Union and Council of Europe are also involved in the discussion of Tbilisi's strategy.

Judging by this information, the experts have finally took care to discuss the essential matters. For instance, Rosbalt reports that according to head of the "temporary administration of South Ossetia" Dmitri Sanakoev, they are going to shape the possible steps aimed at allowing the people to approach each other so that they could safely cross the border of Georgia with Abkhazia and South Ossetia and cooperate economically. However, life will show whether all these good statements imply any specific actions - this is a thing to be hardly believed.

Chairman of the State Duma Foreign Affairs Committee, member of the United Russia fraction Konstantin Kosachev said that the Georgian MFA's reaction to the recent presidential elections in Abkhazia was rather expected. In the opinion of the Russian delegate, the foreign policy administration of Georgia presented not the estimation of the elections but the Georgian party's estimation of the situation.

In his interview given to, the politician pitifully stressed the fact that "the Georgian government refuses to recognize the new reality that has developed in the last two decades on the system level after the last August events". "However, - he is convinced, - should the Georgian government recognize it, it could have done much more for its citizens, many of whom so far consider themselves to be refugees from Abkhazia, and for the Georgians that remain in South Ossetia and Abkhazia".

As reports, "in the current situation, the Georgian authorities should concentrate not on the geopolitical ideas but on the interests of the people, which, by the way, is the direct responsibility of any government", - Konstantin Kosachev believes.

A similar opinion is shared by Georgian political expert Tornike Sharashenidze. He believes that the currently developed new strategy should pursue the aim of restoring Georgia's "territorial integrity" mildly, without any war or violence. Thus, Tbilisi should mainly focus on "enhancing and streamlining economical relationship and common relationship between the people residing in Abkhazia and South Ossetia", - he says.

Today, such attitude prevails not only among the serious Georgian analysts but in political environment as well. Such approach to the settlement of the current problems in Georgia is currently supported by leader of the oppositional party Movement for Fair Georgia Zurab Nogaideli who is staying with a visit in Moscow.
