Military reserve2010-01-20 00:01
Last year, at the opening of the new building of National Guards on December 26, President of Georgia Mikhail Saakashvili stated that the country is ready to start preparing reservists "to fight the enemy". Nevertheless, the most interesting points in Mikhail Nikolozovitch's speech are worth quoting. "There is a war against Georgia and we are threatened every day but the enemy should not cherish any illusions, for any adventure will meet with a rebuff. "We must prepare any citizen in the country, including women, so that they would be ready and armed to provide resistance to the enemy. Each town, house, street and family should become a citadel of resistance and all of us should be
ready for a war".
Thus, the policy of realizing the conception of the "armed people" is quite clear. Besides, a new system of the reservist service will start operating in Georgia this year. Thus, according to the draft law, the reservists will be engaged on voluntary and free-will grounds; any healthy citizen of 27 and older may become a volunteer. According to the new system, the state will sign four-year contracts with the reservists, who will also be paid a certain salary similar to the salary of a corporal of a regular Georgian army for the participation in a-month-and-a-half military training. It is unnecessary to explain that the role of the instructors for the reserve will be played by the military specialists from the USA and NATO countries, and the very scheme of forming a reserve is practically a full copy of the principles of forming the USA National Guards. In general, it is supposed to prepare 3000 military specialists within the first four years.
Let us cite another quotation. "One hundred thousand, two hundred thousand, three hundred thousand, or, if necessary, half a million people must be ready, weapon in arms. We have got enough guns for that and more ammunition than enough". One should underline that the Georgian president is either playing cunning, or is mistaken. The experience of the 2008 August war has shown that the reservists are not at all eager to die for the current Tbilisian regime. Many people can remember the reserve battalions laying weapons before the Russian troops in full strength: they did not at all resemble the "citadel of resistance". As to preparing women for the military resistance, it rather relates to the field of erotic fantasies. It is without question that in a number of countries, there are army detachments fully comprised by women; however, the young Georgian democracy, which has set a course for the true western values, should hardly model itself on China, Libya and Iraq.
One should remember that the half-million army fighting for the independence of Georgia exists only in Saakashvili's imagination. Considering the size of the combat army of several dozens of thousands of people, a large-scale deployment like this is simply impossible. However, one should not forget that the history has already seen the precedent of creating something of the kind. Of course, I am speaking about the units of Volkssturm and Hitlerjugend sent for the defense of Germany. Their military qualities were zero, while the patriotic zeal was excessive. The significant difference is that unlike the leader of the Nazi Germany, the Georgian president, regrettable as it may seem, is not a charismatic leader and will hardly inspire old-aged pensioners and schoolchildren to fight to the bitter end.
