Democracy Champion Impeded by Russia2010-04-21 18:13
During his trip to the nuclear security forum the Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili got hold of the American tribunes and complained to the US citizens that Russia prevents him from building democracy. In his words, the Kremlin would like to remove him by any means. The proof is the claims of the St. Petersburg businessman and Head of the Congress of Georgian Peoples Alexander Ebralidze to the Georgian «throne». The Georgian authorities are actively supporting the boycott of his forum by foreign diasporas.
Saakashvili was called «champion of democracy» in the New York state university. For his successful dash from the authoritarian Socialistic "yesterday" to the liberal capitalistic "tomorrow" he was even conferred the title of an honoured doctor.
In the Harvard University Mikhail Saakashvili praised his own system built in Georgia. According to his press service, the people who wanted to listen to his speech were so many that the organizers had to arrange a lottery to define the meeting participant. It seems that everybody expected a new show of the Georgian President. And he read him a lecture on how security depends on democracy.
According to Saakashvili, the «revolution of roses» has changed the country greatly, as all the coloured revolutions transformed the post-Soviet territory. Only Russia seeking to maintain its influence round its borders is putting spokes in the wheels. The Georgian leader was nearly about to say that it would be better if Moscow ruled on the opposite side of the Earth, like the USA.
Mikhail Nikolayevich is especially worried about the reluctance of Dmitry Medvedev to speak to a person who ordered his troops to attack Tskhinvali over the corpses of Russian peacemakers. «The Kremlin has always thought that our government elected in a democratic way must be replaced by any means», lamented Saakashvili.
He seems to be clairvoyant: soon St. Petersburg will host a forum of the International Congress of Georgian Peoples headed by the businessman Alexander Ebralidze. To the surprise of everybody he has already declared his desire to run for Georgian President in 2013. And it is not a problem that he left his motherland at the age of 17. He applied to Saakashvili for citizenship and got a refusal, after which he applied again.
Tbilisi fears such a pushing candidate more than the devil, especially from St. Petersburg where the Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin started his career. According to Georgians, he is controlled by the Kremlin, Putin and the Russian intelligence service. And he is financed by them, too, though a businessman with a fortune of 500 mln. dollars, if the Georgian mass media are right, could finance anybody himself.
French and Turkish Georgians have already refused to participate in Ebralidze's forum planned for 23-24 April. According to some Tbilisi officials, they sent them a letter saying they would come to Tbilisi on 27 May, the Day of the Georgian Diaspora.
«Putin has elaborated another plan against Georgia and is going to realize it with the help of the Georgian diaspora», - Papuna Davitaya, Georgian State Minister for Diaspora Issues, explained his discontent. His colleague in the Parliament Nugzar Tsiklauri called the forum an attempt of bribery and demoralization of the Georgian diaspora.
