Saakashvili dismissed the Chief of General Staff

2008-11-07 10:33

On November 5 the president of Georgia presented a new creator of military strategy to the Ministry of Defense - vice colonel Vladimir Chachibay. The former Chief of General Staff fell into disfavor. He was deported as the head of border service after compliments for professionalism.

"The fact that we are here and primarily Georgia's functioning are the merit of the Military Forces, - the president stated. - No one in the world would have stopped Putin if we did not believe in effective resistance of the country's military forces".

Then came a rather standard story of the Georgian army first destroying Russia's 58th army and only then fleeing. The President thanked Ex Chief of General Staff of the Military Forces and noted that defects should be cured".

The replacement of the Chief of General Staff is a traditional procedure for Georgia. As only it becomes clear that the Georgian army was again beaten a new strategist is hunted for it. In 2004 when a repeated attempt at invading Tskhinval ended in failure Major General Givi Iukuridze was removed. Then President Saakashvili explained the most important reason of the military mishap: "Iukuridze graduated from Frunze Academy and has a Russian training. But we pass to creating a new army based on NATO standards that is why we appoint people that were educated in the US for the key positions in the General Staff.

The President was supported by then living Premier Minister Zurab Zhvania:

"General Staff must be commanded by the person who has had a serious training in the USA. This change in personnel will allow us to accelerate the reforms in the Defense office. New leaders of the General Staff will be a unique team all members of which have had military training in the USA".

Zaza Gogava was just one of such "young professionals". He graduated from Tbilisi State Technological University in 1994 and a year after began his career in the Georgian security service. From that time on he served in various units and spent several years in the USA for military training. Generally speaking he has nothing to do with hard Soviet legacy. On the contrary he was building an army by NATO model.

Why this army fled Gogava was trying to explain last week to the Parliamentary Committee for the inspection of the August events. He stated that "Georgian army is fully capable and is again ready to offer resistance to any kind of aggression". He says its desertion was a military trick. A new method of resistance when a serviceman leaves his arms and equipment, changes into civilian clothing and runs in the direction of Tbilisi.

Apparently realizing that the story of war victories is made out of thin air Mikhail Saakashvili alarmed Europe of the new "Munich conspiracy" threat. As the president stated to the journalists now certain European countries wish "to be thankful for small mercies".

"Now many European countries have a temptation to pass the execution of Medvedev-Sarkozy agreement on the background. I believe this would be a gross mistake as Russia keeps occupying 20% of Georgia's territory. I hope Europe will not agree to a new Munich conspiracy."

Regardless of the victorious army Saakashvili prefers the EU to save him. At the same time more

juicy details are revealed in Georgia in connection with the August events. More than 60 servicemen are placed under arrest on the charge of desertion. Alongside with this over 500 persons are dismissed from the Military forces of the country. Must be for combat heroism.
