War veteran to guarantee safe election

2010-05-05 23:28

5955.jpegGeorgia's political milieu is so diverse that the parties are simply at a loss inventing ways to surprise voters. In the run-up to the Victory Day Christian Democratic movement nominated a 95-year-old veteran of Vani town lobbying interests of pensioners as a candidate for sakrebulo chairman. Giya Chanturia, the party's candidate for the post of Tbilisi mayor is actively making social-economic promises. He is considered the major rival to the candidate from the dominant party. However it is quite unlikely he will be allowed to win. Tbilisi is critical as the "outpost" of the president's regime.

This pre-election race in Georgia is too dull to get voters interested. Political technologies are practically out of use. Separate parties, and there are 17 that signed in the CEC, look plain against a bright political background. United forces definitely have more chances to win.

Extrasystemic opposition (Alliance for Georgia and National Council blocs) repeat "We'll come" as a mantra. The only difference is that the Alliance looks up to the West while the National Council led by Zurab Nogaideli is Russia-oriented.

System opposition (Georgy Targamadze, Inga Grigolia - a Christian-Democratic union) avoids political issues basing their campaign on social-economic promises.

To show off concern for socially unprotected layers of population Christian-democrats nominated Mikhail Khardzeishvili, a 95-year-old WWII veteran as a candidate for city council deputy in Vani town (West Georgia) hoping for his Caucasian longevity and his weight as ex chairman of Union of Veterans among elderly voters.

"For decades Mikhail Khardzeishvili has been longing for a better future for our people, he has 70 years' teaching experience. This is a person who at the age of 95 thinks and finds internal strength to serve his people", - was the presentation of the candidate made by Georgy Taramadze, the party leader, saying that the veteran would be the oldest candidate at this election. And the most fertile, we'll add: he has three children, six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Khardzeishvili did not leave the favor unanswered defining the Christian Democratic Movement as the "only party able to tackle problems of the veterans and taking their life standards to a higher level".

Giya Chanturia, nominated by the CDM as Tbilisi mayoral candidate focuses on social care for residents of the capital promising to lower taxes, improve business environment and increase number of jobs. He is considered as the strongest rival to Gigi Ugulava, the current mayor.

Extrasystemic opposition tried to get rid of him using exchange of votes as a pretext. The Alliance for Georgia suggested that Christian Democrats support Irakli Alasania promising to campaign for Inga Grigolia, a well-known journalist, a candidate for the post of Tbilsi sakrebulo chair from the CDM in return.

The National Council immediately called this deal impossible. According to Zviad Dzidziguri, a Conservative and a mayoral candidate, Christian Democrats don't take decisions without permission from the authorities. "This is an a priori unfeasible project since everyone knows that Christian Democrats coordinate their actions with the government", - Dzidziguri commented.
