It took Georgia 53 minutes to occupy Tskhinval

2008-12-01 14:12

It was stated by the Defense Minister David Keserashvili at the session of the interim parliamentary committee for investigation of the August events.

According to him problems of the Georgian troops began on August 9 when the Russian jets started bombing the town.

"Afterwards the Georgian troops had to retreat several times. Many people say we did not occupy Tskhinval. It is not true. 53 minutes after the order Tskinval was totally ours", - the military minister summarized.

8/5/8/858.jpegStrange as it is but the committee had no doubts. Apparently the deputies are really bad at figures. Actual chronography of the events was unveiled to the whole world long ago. At 12.30 am on August 8 the Georgian troops started their advance against Tskhinval. At 2.00 pm Saakashvili made a television appearance announcing a three-hour moratorium on hostilities in town to let refugees out. It results that the notorious 53 minutes lingered for two days. After that the Georgian troops retreated without occupying the whole of Tskhinval.

As Kesarishvili says the decision on the start of the operation was taken to prevent Russian army deployment and Georgian armed forces complete destruction.

"Entrance of the Russian troops in the territory of South Ossetia began on July 20 when air force units of Pskov division were transferred to Roksky tunnel.- the head of the Defense ministry asserted. - By July 25 the 20th motorized rifle brigade (Volgograd), 7th assault combat division (Novorossyisk) and Budenny motorized rifle brigade joined them.

The Minister is no good at geography either. Entrance to this tunnel is in the territory of Russia. Having lost himself in the map the minister reported to president of Georgia about the aggravated situation and the advance of the Russian armed forces suggesting that their deployment should not be allowed in order to avoid complete liquidation of the Georgian militaries.

There is however one nasty factographic detail. On August 7 Russia was not conducting any military operations against Georgia. Evidently the minister assumed that Russia might concentrate its troops in its territory only for the assault on Georgia. That is why he decided to prevent "deployment" by entering the troops in Tskhinval proactively.

However the awesome deployment still took place. Keserashvili really inspires respect: he was the first one who did not start telling about the great victories of the Georgian army right off the bat but declared defeat.

"From the military point of view the troops have sustained a defeat. I don't think there is an army in the region that could oppose the Russians by its size" - the minister complained. - But Russia has not achieved its goals either. The power in Georgia has been preserved, the country's economy is not destroyed and there has been no further deterioration of our borders".

Minister mentioned the program of the reservist draft admitting it had been a failure "due to subjective and objective reasons". Both can be explained by a simple fact: hardly had the unprepared reservists found themselves on the line of fire they could do literally nothing. It is not the most pleasant fact really as the minister decided to change the subject and speak about military professionals.

"There is a plan to edit a book on real heroic deeds of the Georgian militaries during the war, - Keserashvili stated. - Now we are selecting the material".
