Georgians offer drunk friendship to the Abkhaz

2010-11-12 21:15

9969.jpegThere appeared a strange division of a strange organization in the information space - Council of Elders at the foundation of those wishing to return to Abkhazia. Abkhaz elders got an invitation to meet at a liberal table and make friends there. The statement continues the series of idiotic initiatives promoted by the Georgian people's diplomacy in respect of the "Georgian-Abkhaz friendship". From time to time, Georgian nongovernmental organizations offer reconciliation programs that put even their fellow countrymen to shame.

Actually, the appeal of the Elders' Council at the foundation of those wishing to return to Abkhazia is an answer to the previous statement of the Abkhaz Elders' Council. They called upon Georgia to think of signing a peace treaty instead of making another war. In its turn, the statement appeared when the Georgian media decided that the Abkhaz elders were in the forefront of the struggle with "Russian occupation".

Now they've received from Georgia an invitation to meet with no middlemen at a liberal table and start a direct and honest dialogue. In the opinion of the Georgian elders, it is necessary to jointly develop a sound plan of actions leading to the growth of mutual trust, reconciliation of two nations and revival of traditional values characterizing the multi-century history of the Georgians and Abkhaz' co-existence.

"We should find a real way out of this deadlock. We look into the future with hope and optimism. We reckon that our appeal and outstretched hand of reconciliation and restoration of friendship will evoke response. Our nations must revive their friendship despite the will of any opponents to the peaceful settlement of our common problem", - goes the appeal signed by twelve members of the Elders' Council, of which the eldest is 97.

While you read the text you see the Georgian image of an Abkhaz elder: Circassian national clothes, a Cossack hat, a long stick called "alabasha" in hand and a gaze out of the depth of times. In Georgia, the Abkhaz are often represented as some nineteenth century relics - proud people behind the age who can be reached only by way of appealing to archaic values of patriarchal societies.

The quarterly initiatives of the Georgian people's diplomats bear the same "standardized" character. In this case, Georgians have made it the following way: the institution of the Elders' Council has got the highest status and influence in such traditional society as the Abkhaz one. Thus, the contacts with the Abkhaz elders are going to enormously raise the self-esteem of "those wishing to return".

In fact, the Abkhaz Council of Elders is a formal organization; it is a union of authoritative people who were thrown overboard. For instance, let's take Chairman of the Council Konstantin Ozgan. It is hard to name a position he never occupied: from chairman of regional committee of Gudautsky region to the post of foreign minister and vice speaker of parliament. Then, he lost parliamentary elections but the custom of local gerontocracy demanded a compensation for him and Ozgan became the head of the Elders' Council.

As for the Georgian side, the local people's diplomacy obviously goes against the government's strategy. Minister for Reintegration Timur Yakobashvili should better deal with his domestic diplomats instead of pressing upon international organizations.
