Europe feeding Saakashvili’s team with pills2010-11-19 18:23
Official Tbilisi representatives are rejoicing like little children. You bet: "big men" from Europe and America are praising them, promising protection and patronage and even calling "to play games" with them. Following NATO Parliamentary Assembly, which has accused Russia of the "occupation" of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, European Union has welcomed Mikheil Saakashvili as well, while the head of European Commission even suggested that Georgia should file an official application for making a speech at EU. A sweet pill to feed the Georgian leader's dreams.
According to Barroso, such step of Tbilisi's may help strengthen relationship between Georgia and European Union and make the Rose Revolution country more attractive for the European community. Moreover, President of European Commission has already produced the "necessary minimum", having again mentioned the notorious "territorial integrity" of Georgia.
Many of the Georgian pro-government experts together with the local media were simply shocked at such lavish present from Barroso. Being too much exulted, some of them even "bestowed" the title of President of the European Council to him, having undeservingly offended the real EC head Herman Van Rompuy.
Honestly speaking, there is no such notion at all; it's just a simplification of a rather complicated management system of this European organization. Still, sounds nice, isn't it: "President of the European Union has called Georgia to EC". Here it is, the long awaited-for recognition of merits in the country's Europeanization!
Saakashvili's administration immediately announced that Barroso's speech is the expression of the European Union member-countries' agreed position. It their statement, the officials even slightly bit former Head of the French Foreign Ministry Kouchner. "It looks like European Union has reconsidered the situation in Georgia after the resignation of Foreign Minister of France Bernard Kouchner who never mentioned the word "occupation", - goes the report of the Georgian president's press service. That's the meaningful role of a person in history according to the Georgian vision: now that they've removed only one person from the political arena, the whole European Union at last opened its eyes at the true situation in the South Caucasus.
However, according to well-known Georgian political expert Ramaz Sakvarelidze, Georgia's affiliation with the European Union is so far impossible because of Sakartvelo being unready for such a step. "Georgia should think over what it could do for the project implementation. An aspiration for Europe has been the general purpose of Georgia's policy of late. However, there is insufficient specifics in this issue on the part of the Georgian government", - he said in his interview to GeorgiaTimes correspondent.
Besides, the Georgian expert leaves open the possibility of Barroso's statement being solely a diplomatic gesture that did not convey any clearly stated political intentions. "It is a well-known fact that symbols play a decisive role in politics. Even if a gesture, it may mean a lot, especially that it was made by such an influential person as the head of the European Commission. "Barroso, for instance, never took the liberty of dwelling upon the prospect of Georgia's entrance in European Union. One should bear in mind that the statement was made against the background of the resolution on Georgia adopted by NATO Parliamentary Assembly, which has been rather tough on Russia. It all must have some common grounds, not only in respect of Georgia but rather, in respect of the entire post-Soviet space, the part of Eurasia that Europe does not belong to but wishes to control", - Sakvarelidze underlined.
