Vashadze set to establish order in Karabakh2011-01-18 19:38
Georgian FM Grigol Vashadze can't calm down stating that his country will act as a mediator between Armenia and Azerbaijan to settle Nagorny Karabakh conflict. He calls to use norms of international law to ensure effective negotiations. Tbilisi's concern in this awkward issue looks more like a bull-in-a-china-shop situation, or even a completely mad bull. Everyone knows how good Georgia is in solving its domestic problem of territorial integrity.
"We, three states of South Caucasus, must demonstrate unity, commitment to economic activity and make arrangements for economic growth in order to get integrated into European structures. I would like to remark, not only on my behalf, but on behalf of all people of Georgia, that we wish that the conflict be solved as soon as possible. South Caucasus is the land of peace, stability and cooperation. Indeed, all the three countries have wasted a lot of time and today we must look reality in the face to realize that the conflict resolution must comply with norms of international law", - was the Georgian FM's speech.
It is evident that Georgia naively believes that it really can move the issue off from the dead center and bring positivity into the negotiation process. But the fact is no more surprising to anyone. Lately the Caucasian republic has been taking part in all events, even third-rate events to get into the spotlight and gain points in the foreign policy domain.
However, long before the Georgian leaders decided to take this slippery path of peacemaking the conflict in Nagorny Karabkakh had been discussed at all possible levels.
Even Iran made a contribution in problem settlement stating that it is absolutely unnecessary for the problem region like Caucasus to be in territorial strife.
"Nations of the region must live in peace and friendship. We are neighbors, and we can't deny that. This is geography and history. If we try and solve our problems in a fair and friendly way, all problems will find their solutions", - Mahmud Ahmadinedzhad, leader of the Islamic Republic stated. By the way, he does not mind extending boundaries of his own state by annexing the Azeri exclave of Nakhichevan.
Naturally, his proposal was rejected by the Armenian side, and Turkey for whom Nagorny Karabakh issue, like North Cyprus, is a national problem, reiterates its support for Azerbaijan. This provokes Armenia's serious discontent: Armenia thinks that a serious patron like this threatens to deteriorate rather tense relations between two disputers.
The sides responsible for the conflict don't seek a consensus. Official Yerevan represented by president Serge Sargsyan thinks that armistice can be achieved in hours provided Azerbaijan acknowledges Nagorny Karabakh as a sovereign state. Baku disagrees forcing Yerevan to use all diplomatic tools to avoid unambiguous replies, interpretations and positions.
And this is understood. To recognize territories that for the past twenty years have been considered unrecognized republics as sovereign means a crashing defeat. It's like washing out inviolable territorial borders with their own hands. Yet, Azerbaijan, sustained by Turkey's inflexible position, still hopes to return the "occupied territories" into its fold.
