Alasania predicts demographical collapse

2011-02-18 15:25

13721.jpegOnce again Mikheil Saakashvili shows Georgians "the light at the end of the tunnel" forecasting that by 2015 the country's population will return to USSR indexes, i.e. 5 mln people. However, Irakli Alasania, leader of Free Democrats opposition movement has a different opinion on the "light" the Georgian leader sees. He is sure the Georgian nation heads for a demographical catastrophe, and the overly sharp-sighted Georgian leader is responsible for it.

Delivering a speech in parliament, Georgian leader presented his government's forecasts on main macroeconomic indicators in 2015. "We estimate a 50% salary rise, double reduction in unemployment rate, and the most actively growing economy in Europe. All this is due to the reforms we are carrying out. No one has illusions that today's life is hard, but we must know where the country is looking toward and see the light at the end of the tunnel", - Mikheil Saakashvili stated.

After that he mentioned this sacramental figure of 5,000,000 people. According to the president this will  be Georgia's population size in 2015.

Everyone knows the Georgian leader's soft spot for all kinds of round figures. He loves mentioning millions and billions in his speeches. But trusting Georgia's statistical data that report on 4,400,000 population in Georgia last year, Mishiko is slightly wrong, as it is a habit with him. Either an imbecile or a liar can foretell a 600,000 growth in population of Georgia. According to most optimistic data of the National Statistics Bureau of Georgia, annual population growth is below 40 thousand people. It will take Georgia another 15 years (at least) to reach a 5,000,000 figure provided that birth and death rates remain unaltered. Another condition is that Georgia's statistical data are correct.

But calculations made by the statistics service have little credibility. Free democrats leader Irakli Alasania states: the government conceals truth on the demographical situation in the country. Referring to the World Health Organization's report in which Sakartvelo is ranked 3d out of 194 countries facing a drastic decrease in population, the oppositionist uses one word to describe the demographical situation - a catastrophe.

"There are no young people in the regions, everyone leaves, only elderly people remain, - Irakli Alasania, leader of Free Democrats said. - These are real indexes, they are extreme while Saakashvili's propaganda machine shows an opposite picture". Meanwhile, Petre Mamradze, a Movement for Fair Georgia leader confirmed readiness of Georgians for massive emigration in an interview with GeorgiaTimes correspondent. "According to opinion polls, 64% Georgian citizens will either leave the country soon, or want to leave and seek an opportunity", - the politician remarked.

Yet, not only Georgian oppositionists suspect domestic statistics of a biased approach. Even the United States, Mishiko's ally, admit that Georgia's demographic situation is extremely grave.  US Population Reference Bureau forecasts: by 2025 Georgia will face a 300,000 population drop corresponding to 6%. 25 years later the number of Georgian citizens will be reduced by one million, i.e. by nearly a quarter.
