Tokyo asks for money, Tbilisi offers love

2011-03-23 21:47

Edward Shevarnadze, his predecessor, once refused to build an NPP in Georgia. But Mishiko, obsessed with innovative ideas, has no time to evaluate threats and risks. Certainly, after the explosion of the third energy block at Fukushima 1 the global phobia can subside and vanish completely. But then Saakashvili will have to solve other practical issues like nuclear waste utilization, attraction of specialists and NPP fuel.

Besides, construction of such a facility in a seismically hazardous zone of Georgia might cause discontent of neighbors - Russia, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Turkey. The president of the latter vetoed a draft on construction and operation of NPPs adopted by the parliament. Probably, his categoricalness will keep Saakashvili from hurried decisions taken to spite Moscow. After all, it's really senseless to spoil relations with Sakartvelo's key trade partner. Proobably, shipping drinking water and medicines to Japan will distract Mikheil Saakashvili from his intention to put his country right on a time bomb.
