Ex Ambassador of Georgia to the UN Irakli Alasania that is considered the major presidential aspirant by Georgian, Russian and Western European experts arrived in Tbilisi from New York. He made a slashing criticism of Saakashvili's government.
A few hours after the arrival Alasania held a briefing. In his speech he directly accused Mikheil Saakashvili of the war adventure in August and the authoritarian methods he applies.
"The authorities' main responsibility is to avoid an armed confrontation that the country got involved in eventually in spite of repeated warnings of strategic allies", - Alasania emphasized.
He made Saakashvili face the question of responsibility for what has happened: "The war with Russia could have been prevented. The president is fully responsible for drawing the country into this provocative war".
Ex Georgia's Ambassador to the UN believes that there was a peaceful way of settling conflicts and according to him even today this way remains the only real possibility. He also says that the country's safety is not guaranteed and the people fear resumption of a military confrontation.
"The country needs fundamental reforms that will ensure safety and bring hope of overcoming the economic crisis", - Alasania added.
He summed up his speech saying that "it was essential to hold early elections and the sooner the better".
For the time being only the parliament has reacted to Alasania's performance with a heap of reproaches.
Deputy Koba Khabasi, a representative of the dominant party complained to the Georgian media: it hurts to hear about a provocative war from the person that is well aware of the facts and has absolutely truthful information on reality. The criticism started to appear after Alasania's resignation from a high position, before that he did not mind the president's policy.
"Either Alasania lied when he made statements in absolute contradiction to those made today or he is lying now when he is no more in power and is trying to find his place in the Georgian politics by flashy statements, - Khabasi grudged.
Hardly will such accusations of double standards ruin Alasania's reputation. According to the public poll carried out by "Kviris palitra" weekly most part of the Georgian population considers him the most amiable politician. The similar survey was undertaken by "Version" newspaper revealing that Alasania is one of the most popular oppositionists in the country and in this respect he is even ahead of the "iron lady", Nino Burdzhanadze. He is also believed to be the main presidential candidate. It is not impossible that two the political heavy weights - Irakli Alasania and Nino Burdzhanadze - will act in tandem during the election campaign.
Burdzhanadze stated that she shared Irakli Alasania's views and expressed readiness to cooperate with him. "We have had several meetings with Alasania recently", - the Georgian media are quoting, - including a meeting a few days ago in the USA. We discussed the situation in the country and a wide range of other crucial issues. As for his plans at this stage it would be unreasonable for me to talk about this. It's up to him to express his position".
