Israel set to frighten Tbilisi?2011-04-11 18:19
Georgia is completely mixed up in a chess game with Israeli businessmen Roni Fuchs and Zeev Frenkel sent to prison for "a bribe" acting as pawns. New figures continue to appear on the chessboard threatening official Tbilisi with a disastrous defeat in this conflict. Israeli National Security Council hits Saakashvili a new blow placing Georgia in the black list of countries most dangerous to travel.
As the resolution of the Anti-Terrorism Center reads, citizens of Israel might face a danger of being kidnapped by Hezbollah or HAMAS members in Georgia. Certainly, rumors on connections between Georgian authorities and terrorist organizations are numerous.
Yet, hardly anyone doubts that the genuine reasons for this decision on the part of Israel are connected with the notorious Fuchs & Frenkel case. Israeli security officials basically agree with Israeli businessmen who warned they would not have anything in common with the hostile state. Two convicted entrepreneurs, now perfectly familiar with the "fair" trial in Georgia, are strongly supported by political and financial establishment - not only in Israel, by the way. Tel Aviv is trying to make it clear that Israel will assert the rights of the Israeli citizens.
Georgia was shocked to learn about inclusion in the "black list". It's natural: not long ago it was deleted from the list making local politicians and pro-governmental mass media proudly announce the fact to the world community. There were optimistic suggestions on a thaw between two states. Naturally, Tbilisi immediately started thinking of the flow of Israeli investments and possible resumption of supplies of Israeli arms to the Georgian army.
Yet, greediness of Georgian leaders cancelled these beautiful plans. Refusing to refund money to Roni Fuchs the country's authorities are ready to see Israel as a powerful enemy. This will entail large-scale financial and image losses. It is absolutely illogical but acts of Georgian politicians have nothing to do with behavior of sound-minded people.
On the other hand, Georgia now has a marvelous chance to sob about its bitter fate and Moscow's intrigues: as usual, the Georgian side considers Russia responsible for this cool-down in relations with Tel Aviv. According to this version, it was the Russian lobby to get Georgia back to the list of countries dangerous for citizens of Israel. It would be sensible to suggest that rumors about connections between Fuchs, Frenkel and Moscow would come next. For instance: the businessmen have been the Kremlin's agents for a long time and it was a special provocation to have them detained to arouse Israel's discontent. Yes, looks like a perfect conspiracy theory inspired by "spy stories" the current Georgian leaders are so good at inventing.
Speaking seriously, the Fuchs and Frenkel case can lead to irremediable consequences for Georgia's investment attractiveness, and all financial policy of the leaders of the republic, as unattractive as it is. As we know, the country's authorities consider external borrowings and the imaginary flow of foreign capital as the country's number one economic achievement.
