Tbilisi to answer for genocide against Circassians2011-05-25 13:34
On May 20, Georgian Parliament has admitted the genocide against Circassians. Long political games around the issue had an expected final. The outcome of the official Tbilisi's pains was predictable for the reason of the Saakashvili regime's sincere desire to harm Russia in every possible way. And now the republic's authorities will have to face the bitter consequences of such a hasty decision.
An event that has long been discussed by the Georgian "bolshevists" (or, representatives of the parliamentary majority) has happened at last. Georgian deputies adopted a resolution on recognizing the Russian Empire's actions in respect of the Circassian people as genocide. By the way, the "Soviet style" can be clearly seen in everything relating to the situation. The governors of the former empire were also smart enough to take various "oppressed" peoples under their control, while their own people were often far from prospering.
Besides, the date of voting on the issue was chosen right on the anniversary of the end of the Caucasian war. There is an impression that the Georgian people's deputies promised to admit the genocide against Circassians in the context of a social competition. To do them justice, one has to say that they met the schedule. All the 95 deputies who were present at the meeting gave their votes in favour of a document prepared by a group of scientists and political experts.
The decision produced a real sensation among the supporters of the current government. Victorious relations could be heard after the parliament session. The resolution was repeatedly called "historical" and the one that has proved Georgia's true "independence" from the influence of any empires. These loud statements were naturally made by deputies to hide the fact that the very subject of the genocide against Circassians was imposed on them. It is no coincidence that for the first time, the subject was touched upon at one of the conferences organized in Tbilisi with the help of American Jamestown Foundation. The action is evidently aimed at diminishing Russia's influence in the North Caucasus, so the Georgian authorities jumped at it with the enthusiasm of a hungry puppy that has found another tasty bone.
By the way, the authors of the resolution did not conceal that it primarily played the role of weapon in an information war against Moscow and is not at all aimed at protecting Circassians. For instance, head of the Georgian parliamentary committee for expatriate communities and Caucasus Nugzar Tsiklauri has stated that the recognition of the genocide against Circassians will hardly be followed by relevant decisions concerning other historic events of similar nature - notably, the genocide against Armenians on the part of the Ottoman Empire. "We can see the beginning of good relationship between Armenia and Turkey. Public officials of the two countries, presidents or ministers, are getting along well with each other. Accordingly, Georgia's interference from this standpoint will damage these relations", - the Georgian deputy stated openly, stressing the anti-Russian character of the document.
