Untouchables appearing in Georgia

2011-07-19 20:24

Untouchables appearing in Georgia. 19800.jpegNot so long ago, Georgian parliament adopted certain amendments to the Criminal Code of the country which actually turn the officials of the power

-wielding structures, public officers and their family members into a special cast of the untouchables. From now on, an attempt upon the life of a policeman can lead to a much longer imprisonment than an attempt of attacking a common citizen. This decision of the people's deputies has already caused much criticism on the part of the local law-enforcement organizations and representatives of the opposition.

In India, from which the notion of the untouchables came from, representatives of this society layer are at the very bottom of the social ladder. Actually, they play the role of dung beetles, solving the problem of garbage in the streets of the South-Asian giant. But the epithet of the untouchables gradually acquired a less disdainful meaning. This word was used to denote someone who cannot be accessed by common people. Most often, such title is given to representatives of the ruling elite, arrogant pop-stars surrounded by crowds of security guards and so on. In Georgia, the same nickname may soon be given to all the public officers and it will have a rather unflattering meaning.

The point is that the parliament of the republic has recently changed the country's legislation towards toughening the punishment for attacking policemen, government officials and even their family members, as well as administrative property, such as residential facilities, transport and etc. Moreover, the sentences threatening those who have been convicted according to these articles, are rather long. They significantly exceed similar sanctions applied to those malefactors who seek the common citizens' life. According to the amendments to the Criminal Code, timeless imprisonment is also possible.

Of course, the separation of public officers as a specially privileged layer could not but cause a negative reaction in the society. No matter how much Georgian governors told about the endless trust that the MIA officers and officers of other security agencies allegedly enjoy among the population, the people are not at all sure of their servers fairness and neutrality. For instance, a political association called We Ourselves asserts that the government's initiatives speak of conducting a discrimination policy in respect of the citizens. "We believe that this provision of law will cause lawlessness and abuse of power on the part of officials and their family members, which will create a clan of the untouchables having extensive powers. Such legislation will bring Georgia to the level of development of non-democratic countries, which will finally put an end to the notion of justice in our country", - member of movement Lika Nagebashvili is sure.
