Caucasus turning up nose at the West

2011-09-16 13:32

Caucasus turning up nose at the West. 22067.jpegMany have been trying to remake the Caucasus. Inclined to laziness and free load, Tbilisi has lent its shoulder to American democracy, thus having spoiled things not only for Iran dreaming of how to teach Washington what's what and for Russia, which is feeling danger around southern underbelly, but also for Turkey. Though a NATO member, Turkey is going to actively lobby its interests in the region. Azerbaijan and Armenia are still at the crossroads but experts are foretelling a soon outcome: the final choice will

be made at last.

Strange as it may seem, Russia and the USA pursue the same aim of building multipolarity. Another point is that Washington pictures the model of a united world "a la America" - globalization, penetration of the post-industrial countries by foreign corporations, extension of national currency sales markets and promotion of the financial capitalism program at all fronts. Regionalization becomes a relevant trend, which makes everyone think of his place at the international platform, reconsider identity and set up his own sphere of interests.

Turkey and Russia that are actively cooperating in the economic sphere have got a long and complicated history of diplomatic relationship. Armenia, which is Moscow's current outpost in the Caucasus, seriously disrupts Ankara's rapprochement with the Kremlin. But everyone understands that foreign policy vectors cannot rotate chaotically forever, so the choice of this or that model must be done in the nearest future. Washington has so far pushed Georgia into the far corner and turned its eyes on Azerbaijan, which is very attractive as an alternative energy resource supplier.

Today, Russia is regularly reconsidering its gas pricing formula, steadily carrying out economic expansion. Some countries have already declared their refusal to buy natural gas from Gazprom. Such decisions must have political background. Ukraine that would like to get a lot of things from Moscow for free does not agree to a compromise, while other East-European countries are mesmerized by Washington, which is hurriedly trying to realize its plans on locating anti-ballistic missile defense elements in the region. In this context, Baku in the short term will get the right to become a successor that would help solve problems bypassing the Kremlin.

It will be naturally easier to obtain a sound discount on Azerbaijani gas for the potential allies under the White House's pressure. But despite loyalty towards Azerbaijan, both European Union and Turkey will soon demand more and more of it, promising certain dividends, and Azerbaijan will finally face the risk of getting into the vice of international embargo where Libya and Iraq have once got. In connection with the events in Syria, Turkey is looking for a reliable political partner and Baku fits the role best.
