Baku will push Karabakh to the wall2011-10-17 11:22
Azerbaijan decided to follow the example of Chinese emperors and the Israeli authorities - to isolate themselves from their neighbors by impregnable wall. The fence should protect civilians from the Armenian snipers. Every year in the conflict zone dozens of people on both sides are killed from the "sniper war". The mediators proposed Baku and Yerevan to withdraw snipers from the front lines, but things are out there. But what if it would turn out that after the erection of the wall Azerbaijan recognizes the borders of Nagorno-Karabakh Republic and its right to sovereignty?
of Nagorno-Karabakh Republic and its right to sovereignty?
French President Nicolas Sarkozy had not an easy trip to the Caucasus. In addition to another elections which await him at home, the strategically important for the EU republics of the region can not reach a consensus. Russia continues to torture Georgia by the economic embargo and Mikhail Saakashvili - to curse the Russian government and its alleged imperial ambitions in every possible way. Armenia and Azerbaijan are dividing Nagorno-Karabakh and are carrying out "sniper war", since the OSCE Minsk Group has not yet managed to extinguish the smoldering conflict. Now, Baku moves its confrontation with Yerevan to a new level - they are going to build a wall that can protect Azeri civilians and their homes from the fire.
However, such an initiative can be interpreted in two ways not only by Armenia, but also by the international community. It is closely watching the post-Soviet space, wondering which strategy in the political game to choose at a certain time. The policy of conciliation had failed, and only Moscow is still capable of holding the opposing sides from an open armed conflict. Nicolas Sarkozy, who the other day had heard a stream of complaints from the Georgian leader Saakashvili, now is forced to speculate how to assist Baku and Yerevan. He proposed Serzh Sargsyan and Ilham Aliyev his mediation but we all remember how such meetings end - after accusations and complete lack of understanding.
But then suddenly there appeared a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel. Azerbaijan, on the example of their Israeli colleagues, trying to isolate their lands from the Palestinians, began to build a wall at the contact line with Nagorno-Karabakh. Its height is more than 3 meters, the construction began at the village Ortagervend in Aghdam region where they have already built 700 meters of the wall. "The wall will ensure the safety of civilians and enable people to return to their homes. This is a big problem. Noone lives in 24 out of 78 homes of the village as they live under constant fire. And if there is at least some protection from the bullets, people can live there", representative from the local municipality Gabil Abbasov told reporters.
Baku's tactic - to present itself as a victim who is trying to protect themselves against the "barbarians" - is as old as the world. Israel used a similar tactic which has managed to occupy the Palestinian territories for less than 50 years, leaving to the Arabs a small piece, called the Gaza Strip and West Bank of Jordan, while Jewish settlements were distributed in Palestine in 1945. Nevertheless, there is a probability that Azerbaijani authorities want to save its own snipers and shelter from the all-seeing eye of Armenians by the constructing the wall. And besides, the wall can become a symbol of de facto recognition of the border of Nagorno-Karabakh, which unsuccessfully attempts to annex this land and to get the right of sovereignty for the last twenty years.
