Each Caucasian people has its own genocide. For Azerbaijan, genocide is the events in Khojaly. The tragedy of a small town in Nagorno-Karabakh has long been one of the trends in foreign policy of the country. Now the struggle for recognition of the tragedy in Khojaly the genocide, seems to reach the next level - there is a chance that the Azerbaijani interpretation of the events will be recognized by Lithuania.

Recently, the Mexican Senate has recognized the events in Khojaly the genocide. This is very similar to the struggle for the recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, developed in the countries of Oceania. Though, in this case, the exoticism doesn't add this process the reliability. And on the contrary, it devalues the struggle for recognition - even the genocide - in the eyes of the international community. Thus now the main strategy of official Baku is lobbying Khojaly in Eastern Europe. At his press conference, chief of staff of the Azerbaijani parliament said that currently the relevant work is being carried out with the Lithuanian Seimas, as well as the parliaments of other European countries.

This year they mark the 20th anniversary of the Khojaly tragedy, occurred in 1992, so the campaign for recognition must be more active. Internationally, they're carrying out the campaign "Justice for Khojaly", which has not so long got support of the Parliamentary Union of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (PU OIC). This is a very solid structure, which has merged the parliaments of 51 countries. There is nothing extraordinary in the fact that OIC stands on the side of Azerbaijan. Each year, the resolutions of the Parliamentary Assembly of OIC included wording about the aggression of Armenia against the Azerbaijan Republic. This time they added a call to Islamic countries to to intensify the campaign for recognition the 1992 events the genocide.

Well-known Azerbaijani journalist Fuad Safarov, who works in Moscow, considers the campaign for the recognition quite successful. "I think it all turns out. Because Russia, and the whole world, are gradually beginning to learn the truth about the events in Nagorno-Karabakh. And this is great merit of Heydar Aliyev Foundation, which has done much to change the image of Azerbaijan, which had been very negative. Now our point of view is audible", Fuad Safarov told GTimes.

The history of Khojaly in 1992, just like any other similar, has a lot of dark spots. This issue even got its ideology. For the Azerbaijani nation the toponym "Khojaly" has become as the axis which has helped the national identity to form. This is a support point for the modern Azerbaijani state; and although the events of those days have not been fully studied, it's not allowed to anyone to discuss them. The journalist Eynulla Fatullayev, the author of the "Karabakh Diary" known far outside Azerbaijan, has experienced it. He's in the Caucasian journalistic for rather long. Having been ardent Armenia-phobe prior to his travel to Nagorno-Karabakh, on his return to Baku, he published a diary in which he tried to objectively look at the events of the war. In the eyes of the Azerbaijani propaganda, Fatullayev immediately turned into a traitor who later found himself in prison on charges of "insulting the memory of Khojaly victims". Subsequently, they have "found" drugs at him. Fatullayev was freed only in the last year under pressure from European institutions.
