Afghanistan is shedding the blood of the Georgians2012-02-22 16:06
In Afghanistan, as a result of an attack by the Taliban, three Georgian soldiers - corporals Valiko Beraya, Ruslan Meladze and Paata Kacharava - were killed. According to the Defense Ministry of Georgia, the Talibs blew up a car carrying the Georgian military.
Corporals served in the 32nd battalion of the 3rd Infantry Brigade of the Ministry of Defense of Georgia as members of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).
In connection with this, Administration of Georgian President issued a statement by Mikhail Saakashvili in which he had expressed deep condolences to the bereaved families.
"This is a shock for me, including taking into account the fact that I was with them only two days ago. I have witnessed their dedication and spirit with which they had been carrying out dangerous tasks", said in a statement.
Georgian soldiers are serving in Afghanistan since August 6, 2009. During the participation of Georgian contingent in ISAF operation under the auspices of NATO forces in Afghanistan 15 soldiers have already been killed.
Recall, December 16, Mikhail Saakashvili addressed to the Georgian MPs with a proposal to send another battalion of Georgian infantrymen as members of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) for peacekeeping operation in Afghanistan.
However, at the same time, Saakashvili hasn't thought a little that the recent reports of the victims of the operation would force the soldiers to doubt in the suitability of such a dangerous voyage. Now, according to the media reports, the Defense Ministry is urgently compelled to apply punitive measures to those who refuse to serve in Afghanistan.
But there are not many of those who share the ideas of the leadership of the country. After the reports about the victims, the Georgian soldiers have begun to refuse from the trip to Afghanistan. And thereby have put Saakashvili in an awkward position before the United States.
The protest in Georgian society is gradually increasing. According to former Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze, they must not allow needless casualties in Afghanistan. "I was hoping that after the Americans decided to withdraw its troops from Afghanistan, our government has thought better and realized that we had nothing to do on someone else's war. Americans do not want war, they want to fight someone else's hands. All the countries are withdrawing their troop, but we're increasing and increasing our contingent there", Shevardnadze said. According to him, the Georgian authorities are apparently waiting for weapons from America in exchange of taking part in anti-terrorist operation. "You can not justify it even by the fact that NATO would let us join it. The continued Georgia's participation in this operation and an increase of the military contingent is a crime against the country", he believes.
