Burjanadze: We may be killed without a trail2012-03-12 18:48
Actor Gia Burjanadze, well-known in Georgia and loved by many, is often compared to David the Builder - they say they are similar. They also say that the current ruler of the country Mikhail Saakashvili hates him just for the streaks making him similar to the legendary Georgian king. In an interview to GTimes the famous actor recalled the events of May 26 last year, when Georgian President organized "St. Bartholomew's Day massacre" for his countrymen.
You took part in protests on May 26, which has ended tragically for many. Tell us what happened that night?
I hate to remember the events of May 26. The authorities must respond for the offense. Let everyone know what happened in Tbilisi that night. They killed and arrested several dozen people. Until now, there are missing people. May 25, the staff of Tbilisi District Office came to us at 23:45 and told that we were to leave the square. At this time we were surrounded by riot police. Even if we really wanted to do this, we did not have the slightest chance to leave. This was done specifically to severely punish the people.
They said that the police was tough with the protesters. What were the detentions in fact?
They were doing it in most cruel manner. People were led to the slaughter. They used against the people everything: water cannons, tear gas, rubber bullets, and batons. Angry riot police officers surrounded the people, and they acted not alone. Mad people, dressed in civilian clothes and in masks, drunk or having used the drugs. We waded through the crowd toward the theater "Rustaveli", but we were met by armed men.
As a result, the police managed to arrest you?
At first, we hid in the building of the cinema "Rustaveli" and then climbed on the roof. We have been already anticipating that soon snipers would shoot at us there. We found the ladder and were going to come down to the backyard theater. At this time one of our friends went to the riot police and surrendered to make them not to pay attention to us and we were able to descend safely. But they noticed us and started shooting into the air with cries "Surrender!" We had no other way but obeying. They handcuffed me and let down into the cinema. The hall and foyer was full brutally beaten people. I barely stepped through the large puddle of blood. I was approached by one of the officers of my growth who sarcastically said: "See, now you're in my hands. I'll do with you everything I want".
What can you tell about a time you have spent in detention?
After the police station in Gardabani we were returned back to Tbilisi, to police department in Dighomi. They removed the handcuffs. They brought me on the fifth floor where I heard terrible screams, groans and curses from different rooms. Police officers were holding pliers with traces of blood. Floors and walls were also stained with blood; blood-stained clothes were everywhere. Police officers were working in the rubber disposable gloves.
