As reported by the RBC, the meeting of the countries members of the so-called "Friends of Syria", which was attended by representatives of more than 60 countries and 10 international organizations, finished yesterday in Istanbul. At the meeting it was suggested to impose new sanctions against the regime of President Bashar al-Assad.
Additional sanctions may be imposed in case of non-fulfillment of the terms of the plan, developed by the UN special envoy Kofi Annan, consisting of six points. A working group, whose first meeting will be held in Paris on April 16, 2012, will elaborate these measures.
Note, the participants of the meeting have recognized the Syrian opposition National Council the legal representative of the Syrian people and agreed to additional funding of the Council.
Recall, previously, the UN and the Arab League special envoy to Syria General Kofi Annan got the confirmation that the Syrian authorities had approved the plan of peaceful conflict resolution.
"Syrian leadership wrote a letter to special envoy Kofi Annan about its consent to his six-point plan. Plan was previously approved by the UN Security Council", Annan's spokesman Ahmad Fawzi said.
In turn, Annan called on Damascus to urgently start implementing the plan.
"Special envoy expresses his acknowledgment for the broad support to his mediation efforts and calls on key countries to help in their implementation and to ensure their effective implementation", the edition quoted Ahmad Fawzi.
This plan includes a cease-fire, start a political dialogue between the government and opposition, as well as providing humanitarian organizations access in Syria.
At the same time, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry, the intentions of "Friends of Syria" related to the military support to the Syrian opposition, voiced in Istanbul, are contrary to the objectives of a peaceful settlement to the conflict in the country, the Polit.ru reported.
"We must not incite destructive strife among the Syrians, as provided by the "Annan's plan", but to seek and to ensure prompt cease-fire and to stop violence from all sides, as well as to establish a broad dialogue to find solutions acceptable to all Syrians", the edition quoted the words of the deputy head of information and press department of the Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova.
Note, the meeting of "Friends of Syria" in Istanbul was attended by the representatives of more than 80 countries and several international organizations. Russia and China decided not to take part in the event. Moscow does not support the activities of "Friends of Syria", considering that the UN Security Council should play the leading role in the Syrian settlement.
