Attempt at Ankvab: Just Business?2012-04-13 19:31
Yesterday, GTimes reported that the suspects in the assassination attempt at the president of the republic Ankvab were detained in Abkhazia. Little has changed over this time. The main suspect is an influential businessman whose financial state has suffered due to the Ankvab's policy. The investigation has a following version: the new president stands on the way of a big local business. But if the arrests continue, it could gain political overtones.
Abkhazia came to a standstill. Everyone is waiting for continuation of the series of revelations that began yesterday. Six people were arrested on suspicion of organizing the attempt on the president. An influential businessman Anzor Butba is among them.
However, at the time of writing this material, the detainees were not formally charged.
Officials keep silence. Yesterday, there appeared a press release about the detention of suspects in the assassination attempt at Ankvab, without names. And this happens in a small country, where everyone has long been aware of the names.
The focus is on the figure of the businessman Anzor Boothby. This man wasn't noticed in politics, preferring to be in the shade, but he played some role in the political upheavals of recent years. His business interests included many areas, including the extraction of inert materials and timber processing. Many were aware that he had confrontation with Alexander Ankvab for a long time, from the time when Ankvab was vice-president. Ankvab was opposed to development of inert material in the country, which was supposed to be sent to the Olympic construction in Sochi. Actually, after Ankvab's coming to power this business was curtailed.
Anzor Butba is a really influential person in Abkhazia. He could even afford to argue with the former president, Sergey Bagapsh. Now the main question is whether he can be the customer of the crime.
Butba is not the only person arrested on this case. But the rest of those arrested - are fairly young men, apparently without significant resources and influence in business or politics. That is, perhaps, they may be the executors of the crime, but it is very unlikely that they were the customers. Now we need to await developments. If another influential figure gets arrested, it would be possible, perhaps, to think about the plot, which involved broad forces. But so far, Anzor Butba seems the only possible customer of the crime.
The detentions took place simultaneously at several points in the west of the country. One of the detainees lived in the resort village Pitsunda. Witnesses say the law enforcers detained this person like a inveterate militant. Nine-story house, where he lived, was surrounded. A squad of security forces broke into the apartment. At the same time, intimates of some detainees confidently claim the presence of an alibi.
In Abkhazia, they were well aware that if this crime would be revealed, the society would be shocked, since the fact that the assassination attempt at the president was organized by a force, annoyed by his policy of "restoring order" in different areas, was clear from the outset. And these forces are, of course, inside Abkhazia.
Now everything depends on how the events will develop further. If the circle of the detainees remains the same, then we can speak about a conflict between local authorities and major local business. If some major figures with political and social weight are involved in this case, the consequences can be very serious, down to reformat the entire country's political field.
