GLOBAL TV outside the law2012-06-15 18:43
A U.S. citizen Alexander Ronzhes, who is a share participant of the TV company GLOBAL TV, recently associated with the political activities of Georgian oligarch Bidzina Ivanishvili, detained in Georgia.
As reported by the IA Regnum, according to Ronzhes' lawyers, he was arrested on June 14 by the Investigation Unit of the Ministry of Finance of Georgia at the Tbilisi International Airport while trying to depart to Istanbul, from where he intended to go to the United States. The lawyers were not allowed to Ronzhes for some time. Later the representatives of the Investigation Unit of the Ministry of Finance of Georgia arrived there and started his questioning.
Investigation Unit of Georgian Ministry of Finance explained the reasons of the incident in a special official statement. According to the statement, the Investigation Unit has started an investigation into possible money laundering, the information about which had been received from the Financial Monitoring Service of the National Bank of Georgia, the edition reported.
"On June 8, Mr. Ronzhes sold for 3,100,000 GEL ($1,920,000) a real estate property in Tbilisi that he had originally purchased for 180,000 GEL ($116,000) in 2004. On June 13, he withdrew in cash hundreds of thousands in US dollars and Georgian Lari from his bank account", said in the statement by the Investigation Unit of the Ministry of Finance of Georgia on this occasion.
"Georgian banks are responsible-under the anti-money-laundering standards of the international Financial Action Task Force and of the Council of Europe's MONEYVAL Committee-for alerting financial authorities about suspicious transactions, including large cash withdrawals. Thus the scale of the cash withdrawal triggered an immediate investigation by the Investigation Unit of the Ministry of Finance of Georgia (IU). The IU is examining the sale price of the property in in the context of potential money laundering ; an initial appraisal indicates that Mr. Ronzhes received more than double the current market value of the property from a company called Leasing 21 Ltd.", also stated by Georgian Investigation Unit of the Ministry of Finance.
Previously, the Financial Monitoring Service of the Control Chamber of Georgia examined the activities of the company GLOBAL TV, having concluded that the company had used the illegal donations, made by the politically interested person Bidzina Ivanishvili, and had provided free satellite dishes for everyone, so they could watch "Channel 9", created by Ivanishvili. "On the basis of the conclusion of the Control Chamber, the National Communications Commission decided that the GLOBAL TV should carry out the dismantling of all antennas installed throughout Georgia.
Earlier, we wrote about the situation related to the distribution of free satellite dishes by the GLOBAL TV. The contract with the oppositional "Channel 9" turned out badly for the cable company GLOBAL TV. Channels "Imedi" and "Rustavi 2" have refused in cooperation with it; and тщц the police comes to the houses of the people who have satellite dishes of this company with the demand to dismantle it. At the same time, the number of subscribers of the GLOBAL TV is growing. This indicates that viewers prefer "Channel 9" to the government broadcasters.
