Georgian voters in rose-coloured glasses2012-06-20 17:23
Control Chamber of Georgia got interested in a recent statement by the representative of the businessman Levan Pkhakadze, a possible candidate to the deputies from the "United National Movement". He is a shareholder and chairman of the board of directors of the company "WISSOL" - the largest supplier and seller of fuel in Georgia. On Pkhakadze's behalf the people was promised partial funding of health care that was seen as an attempt to bribe voters.
Levan Pkhakadze's representative promised the local population partial funding of health services from the businessman. Thanks to Pkhakadze the local residents could get glasses for free. According to monitoring service, the prosecution should launch an investigation into the incident in connection with the establishment of a crime in this action - namely, bribery of voters.
Video of the meeting of Pkhakadze's representative with the residents of Samtredia has appeared in social networks. "You need glasses? With Levan's help we'll give it you for free. You are diagnosed - batono Levan will finance this operation too", a young woman told Samtredi residents.
Charity action in Samtredia caused a lot of questions. Pkhakadze does not contact with journalists, a chief physician of the Samtredi medical center has once made a comment to the media by phone. Now he's avoiding contact with the media.
Irakli Lagidze, chief physician of the Samtredi medical center: "It is not true. It's absolute lie. I do not know where the journalists get information".
However, there are witnesses who confirm the fact of distribution of glasses.
Most of them are concealing their identity, but some say directly.
Lily Failodze: "In Samtredia, in addition to me, there are many people who know this fact, but they're afraid to talk about this. What should I be afraid of? I have nothing to fear. My children have gone abroad to earn their bread. We are pensioners with my husband. They can cancel our pension, but we don't care about it! I need nothing from evil people! Everyone who got glasses, they were warned not to speak a word of this fact".
Now the distribution of glasses to the needy population in Samtredi Medical Center is stopped. Free examination by the ophthalmologist is also canceled. Samtredi residents say that the charity event, organized by Levan Pkhakadze, was suspended after the opposition media had shown the footage of Pkhakadze's meeting with the population.
Louise Kuchukhidze, a resident of Samtredia: "I have not had time to get glasses. My neighbors have received".
The Control Chamber is interested in this fact and distributed the following information: "According to the Financial Monitoring Service of the Control Chamber, the Prosecutor's Office should consider the information about providing financing of health care to the Samtredi population. This may have signs of a crime".
