Deadly production in Zestafoni2012-07-20 17:03
Zestafoni District has turned into a zone of ecological disaster. In Imereti now there are three companies for the production of ferroalloys. Zestafoni, Argvetsky and Nahshirgeleysky plants are polluting the outskirts.
The village of Sakara is bordering ferroalloy plant in Zestafoni, and therefore suffers the smoke most of all. "When the smoke comes, it is impossible to exist here", Vazha Bochoidze, a resident of Sakar says. Sky over the village is covered with clouds of smoke early in the morning and late in the evening.
Gela Barbakadze, a resident of Sakar: "Filters are expensive; and the plants are saving at the expense of human health. I had a heart attack. I was forbidden to work. What now, should I wait until death comes? I am 66 years old. I've spent my whole life in Sakar. Smell of gas and sulfur comes here in the morning here along with the smoke. Look how many young victims of cancer and heart disease are buried at our cemetery. The air is polluted here".
In Zestafoni, percentage of cardiovascular diseases and respiratory diseases is really high. This was confirmed by the chief physician of the Zestafoni hospital "Ferromed" Kote Kavtaradze, although he noted that the situation was not alarming.
Infectious diseases specialist Mamuka Chichinadze, who treated the worker Gocha Samkharadze, who died in the spring, excludes harmful toxic effect. "General situation here is more tense than anywhere else, but the development of the disease is slow and not sharp, like in the case of Samkharadze", Mamuka Chichinadze said.
51-year-old gotcha Samkharadze, operator at the plant of ferroalloys, died in May. April 23, he was brought to doctor Chichinadze at the clinic "Ferromed". There he was diagnosed acute hepatitis B. Samkharadze worked at the plant for seven years. He did not drink or smoke. Before starting work on the production, he was in good health. In January, he fell ill with acute bronchitis, later - pneumonia. His condition worsened in April.
Mzia Samkharadze, wife of the deceased: "When I enter the factory I can't breath, there are not enough air. You can suffocate from the hot air, husband said, but what could he do? We have three children, he could not leave work".
The chief engineer of the Zestafoni plant Vasil Gvelesiani categorically rules out a violation of security measures. He says that he cared for the population health and the health of factory workers. "Damaged furnace filters has been changed", he says. "In 22nd, 23rd and 25th cells 2000 filters has been replaced and installed". However, cross-checking of their proper operation proved to be impossible.
Nikoloz Mzhavanadze, director of the Center for Environmental Law: "As they say, the filters are replaced, but we are not allowed inside. We would like to conduct our own examination. We do not trust a study conducted by the national agency for nature. There are governmental interests, they cover the company".
Zestafoni ferroalloy plant still does not have the necessary documents to obtain a license. Ministry of Nature Protection has given the company time to prepare the appropriate documentation, although the law does not provide any term or work in such mode. And for the violations the plant was fined the minimum amount of 7000 GEL.
