Azerbaijan will pay Iran for Caspian?2012-08-30 16:31
Deputy Head of the Department of Marine Environmental Protection of Iran Reza Abdul Karbasi said his country intended to exact from Azerbaijan a penalty for polluting Caspian environment. Iran stated Azerbaijani side did not take measures to clean the Caspian Sea and used obsolete equipment for oil production. In this regard, Tehran intends to calculate costs of cleaning the sea and submit an invoice to Baku.
The head of Iran's Research Institute of the Caspian Environment Reza Pourgholam stated that industrial and oil pollution of the Caspian Sea has reached a critical level. According to him, the responsibility for this lies on Russia, Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan, which are involved in oil production in the Caspian shelf.
Head of Oil Research Center Ilham Shaban believes absurd such statement of a question by Iran. Any oil production suggests environmental pollution. But it depends on how you are producing the oil, and accordingly polluting the environment. Waters around many modern oil platforms are full of fish, and this shows that the water there is quite pure. In order to implement such technology it is necessary to provide the facilities with the latest equipment and trained staff working with it. Azerbaijan has both of this, expert believes.
Azerbaijan believes that among the five states Iran is most poorly in this regard. It is known that the current regime of Iran is under pressure and economic sanctions imposed by the West. This means that Iran's oil companies are unable to purchase the advanced equipment abroad. In this case it's unprofessional to state that the Iranian equipment can compete with the West.
According to the head of the environmental and conservation policy department of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan Rasim Sattarzadeh, this is not the first such indictment against Baku from the Iranian side. He believes that the main cause of pollution of the Caspian Sea is the rivers falling into it. They carry industrial and domestic waste from the land. This shows that Azerbaijan cannot be a major source of pollution. Real indicator of pollution of the Caspian environment is connected to the number of people living in the coastal strip.
Taking into account the fact that the Iranian coast of the Caspian Sea is home to much more people, in comparison with other countries, we can say that Iran is much more involved in marine pollution from land than Azerbaijan. Lack of sewage treatment plants and sewage systems at the Iranian coast plays very important role in pollution of the Caspian environment. Local population is farming, using large amounts of fertilizer, including pesticides, Sattarzadeh says.
Unfortunately, even those countries that are geographically far away from the sea are also involved in the pollution of the Caspian Sea. Plants and factories in Armenia and Georgia, located on the banks of the rivers of Kura and Araz, are dumping waste there. All of this gets into the Caspian Sea.
Azerbaijan has conducted extensive work in the field of environmental protection. It pays great attention to environmental issues, including the Caspian Sea. In recent years, it has carried out large-scale projects for the reconstruction of the centralized sewer systems, upgrading existing equipment for waste water treatment and construction of new systems in order to prevent pollution of the Caspian Sea. By installing purification devices modular to prevent contamination of the small local sources there was created "system of environmental protection of the Caspian Sea".
