Georgia: Homeland for one, post-Soviet region for another2012-10-09 18:32
Today, the long-awaited meeting between President Saakashvili and the new Prime Minister of the country Bidzina Ivanishvili took place. Saakashvili, who has found himself and his party "United National Movement" in the opposition after the parliamentary elections, was very diplomatic. He stated that for the first time a peaceful transfer of power took place in the "region of the post-Soviet space". Such behavior has surprised the people. Now they can expect everything from Saakashvili, even suicide.
The meeting between Mikheil Saakashvili and Bidzina Ivanishvili took place today at 12 pm. One of the leaders of the "United National Movement" Pavle Kublashvili told reporters about the topic of discussion between the president and the new Prime Minister. "Right now the main thing is the formation of a new parliament and the transfer of power. The issue of staffing of the new parliament in the new composition - this is the main question of discussion", Kublashvili said.
The meeting was held in Avlabari presidential residence. After the talks, which lasted about an hour, the participants spared 10 minutes for the journalists. They spoke to the media in the yard of the residence.
In his speech, president of Georgia promised that the transfer of the executive power to the winning coalition "Georgian Dream" would take place without any incidents.
"Peaceful transfer of executive power takes place in this region of the post-Soviet space for the first time. Georgian people have made choice, and we say that we respect the choice of the Georgian people. It's no surprise that among us there are fundamental differences on many political and national issues. But we, as a responsible power, and I, as a president, who is the guarantor of the Constitution, will ensure the transfer of power to the government without any incidents. This is the first case of the preservation of democracy in the interests of the Georgian people in the history of Georgia", Saakashvili said.
According to the president, preservation of democracy and free elections is the main thing for Georgia. "The main thing is to improve the democracy and to have an opportunity for its development. And to provide better prospects to the Georgian people. As the president of Georgia, I will do my best in order to protect the interests of the Georgian people; and this will be my driving force in the future months and years", Mikheil Saakashvili said.
According to him, everyone must focus on the future, despite the fundamental differences of the views on almost all issues. "I hope we manage to carry out all the processes within the constitutional and democratic framework", the president said.
According to Bidzina Ivanishvili, "the external strategy of the new government is the European and Euro-Atlantic integration". "We will treat our opponents not as they deserve, but in accordance with the desire of our motherland and the people of Georgia, in accordance with our culture. We will constantly strive to Europe. Georgia can become a NATO member. It's very good that we had an opportunity to meet. It's very good that after the election Saakashvili has made a statement, which I complimented. Our meeting is the proof that we are civilized people, we treat the opponents with dignity, despite the fact that their actions against us were unworthy", Bidzina Ivanishvili said.
The main thing the citizens of Georgia have noticed is the fact that Ivanishvili used the word "homeland" in regard to the country, while Saakashvili, speaking of Georgia, used the term "region of the post-Soviet space".
