Not United National Movement

2013-05-24 13:49

"Mikhуil Saakashvili's reaction to the arrest of Merabishvili was quite expected. Basically, he said what the president had to say. He has realized that his sharp critical response to all events in the country has ceased to affect the public, so he decided to select a more balanced way and replaced the style of communication with the public with a less aggressive," an independent expert Zaal Anjaparidze said in a commentary to GeorgiaTimes Georgian.

At the same time, he did not rule out that such a change in the style of the president may be related to inter-party competition. "It is possible that he (Saakashvili) considers Merabishvili a competitor, since in the "National Movement" there has already started internal party strife, the struggle for spheres of influence. This also could played a role, but I still think that mild reaction of Saakashvili is associated with his decision not to annoy the audience," said Anjaparidze. He stressed that such a change is noticeable only to very observant and well-informed about the political life people. And for most people the leaders of "United National Movement" are still showing external unity.

Zaal Anjaparidze does not exclude the fact that discord in the ranks of the "United National Movement" will become more apparent in the future. Maybe a certain part will soon break away from this united at first glance party and try to establish a new political association.

According to the president of the Club of Independent Experts Soso Tsiskarishvili, the reaction of Mikheil Saakashvili to the arrest of Merabishvili and Chiaberashvili was softer than expected, but rather understandable. "He was more lenient in the estimates since he knew what could be the reaction of the population. Nevertheless, he is seeking to spread information "about what is happening in the country" to the West. And here, in Georgia, Mikheil Saakashvili is still in a campaign mode trying to win by his statements all those who are still hesitating," Soso Tsiskarishvili stated in an interview with GeorgiaTimes.

According to him, recently the Georgian society has witnessed another unexpected event - the coincidence of views and assessments between Mikheil Saakashvili and Catholicos-Patriarch Ilia II in relation to the action of sexual minorities, held on May 17. "Both have simultaneously criticized the organizers of this event for the fact that it was scheduled for the day after the day of mourning in connection with the deaths of three Georgian soldiers in Afghanistan. And many of his colleagues have not forgiven Mikheil Saakashvili his assessment, including the wife of the Security Council Secretary George Bokeria. All of this suggests that in the depths of the "National Movement" there are serious differences, and a certain part of the "Nationals," not willing to be in the ranks of the party, which is associated with the sins of Saakashvili and Merabishvili, is striving to stand apart from the leaders and start an independent political activity," says the expert.
