“Incriminating evidence” against opposition as Saakashvili’s new “weapons”2009-03-25 21:03
Georgia's Interior Ministry declared war of incriminations to the plans of opposition. Another one after autumn 2007 and this time the first to be exposed were the party of Nino Burdzhanadze, ex Speaker of Parliament, and obscure "People's Movement - for Salvation of Georgia". The war is not over and the Interior Ministry promises to unveil new materials that evidence Georgian opposition's preparations for an armed takeover.
For now only 11 oppositionists are arrested with 9 of them being members of Burdzhanadze's Democratic Movement - United Georgia but the opposition considers it possible that the detentions will continue. Even Nino Burdzhanadze's husband Badri Bitsadze thinks "tomorrow" he can be the next to be arrested. Anyway according to him Interior Minister Vano Merabishvili has already warned him that Mikheil Saakashvili insists on his arrest and advised him to leave Georgia for a month.
Video and audio recordings presented by the Interior Ministry were made in the same settings by a hidden camera, from a car, in a room or in a street and "the rebels" are speaking to an unknown person whose face is blurred. Almost in all cases these are negotiations on arms acquisition- a few guns or submachine guns - and the plans of a riot including a plan to seizure the parliament building, mobilization of "armed guys" - all this mentioned by that "unknown person" in one of the recordings.
Parliamentary opposition of Georgia makes no harsh statements on the materials revealed by the Interior Ministry acknowledging its disapproval of violence from whatever side and considering it necessary to have an independent expertise of video and audio recordings in order to establish whether they are montage or not.
Some non-radicals from the parliamentary majority come forward with similar demands. The leaders of the dominant party are more severe in their attitude and favor the efficient work of the Interior Ministry that has uncovered several criminal gangs. They also call on the rest of the opposition and the society to disassociate from the criminals "on time".
Statements about disapproval of armed confrontation and disassociation from violence were made practically by all opposition forces including Nino Burdzhanadze who emphasized that she had been fighting and would continue to fight for the change of power in a peaceful way only. At the same time most of the non-parliamentary opposition brought the video recordings presented by the Interior Ministry to challenge stating that such "soap operas" had been shown to public more than once.
This is what David Usupashvili, leader of the Republican Party of Georgia and one of Alliance for Georgia leaders, said commenting on the Interior Ministry's new materials: this time another "Vano Show" (Interior Minister Vano Merabishvili) was shown to people.
He believes the presented video recordings do not deal with real oppositionists: special agents planted inside the opposition are featured instead.
"After watching these "series" personally I have a lot of questions. Firstly: the moment of arms acquisition is registered, and if the Interior Ministry had these materials and timely information why were not "the criminals" arrested at the time of acquisition? I think this is a pure frame-up recorded to intimidate people and frustrate the plans of opposition to organize mass rallies",- Usupashvili stated.
