Opposition in search of strategy
Several months after the active confrontation, the Georgian opposition assured itself of the cherished illusions as to the possibility of changing power within several days by a fixed date. It looks like Saakashvili is definitely going to keep his promise to stay in power until 2013. The oppositionists have slightly changed their tactics and want to present more thorough explanations of their tasks and objectives to the international community. Meanwhile, the authorities do not keep silent either: they exhibit activity and try to diminish the opposition in all possible aspects.
Olympic peace breakers
Tbilisi stays true to itself. Last year it unleashed the aggression against South Ossetian civilians and killed Russian peacekeepers on the Beijing Olympics opening day. Now the Georgian authorities launched a new attack objecting to holding 2014 Olympics in Sochi (Russia). A year ago the attempt to change the IOC’s decision and relocate the Games to a different country failed. The Russian Olympic Committee doesn’t take these threats seriously.
Opposition on way back to parliament?
Autumn has come. The Georgian opposition is threatening to hold new protest actions but has not yet defined the new struggle strategy. However, some of the oppositional activists may return: not to the protesters’ tribunes but to the parliament. For instance, leader of the Svoboda (Freedom) party Konstantin Gamsakhurdia is consulting on the matter with the USA.
No chance to solve refugee problems unilaterally
On Wednesday the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution on status of refugees from Abkhazia and South Ossetia proposed by the Georgian delegation at the 63th assembly session within “Protracted conflicts in the GUAM area (Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldavia) and their implications for international peace, security and development” agenda item.
