Georgia: time to make a choice
Another round of negotiations between the representatives of Georgia, Abkhazia, South Ossetia, Russia, USA, EU, UN and OSCE is going to be held in Geneva today concerning the situation in the South Caucasus. The parties are intended to discuss the issues of safety and the problems of refugees. Moscow is also going to raise the issue of signing an agreement on Tbilisi’s nonaggression against Sukhum and Tskhinval. In its turn, Georgia will acquaint the participants of the discussions with the strategy developed in respect of the young republics. According to the Georgian strategists, the document is aimed at peaceful cooperation with Abkhazia and South Ossetia. The point is that these assurances have got nothing in common with the increased military potential of Georgia.
What shall we expect from next round?
February 7 is the second round of Ukraine’s presidential election between two rivals - PM Yulia Timoshenko and Viktor Yanoukovich, Party of Regions leader. GeorgiaTimes has already written about the first round featuring the so-called “monitors” from Georgia, almost protagonists of the event. Curiously enough, Tbilisi is still frequently mentioned in the run-up to the coming duel between Ukraine’s two heavy-weighters.
New plans of the Georgian strategists
Tbilisi started developing the plan of actions in the context of the approved strategy concerning Abkhazia and South Ossetia. According to State Minister of Georgia for Reintegration Temur Yakobashvili, the republic is ready to submit this strategy to European Union for discussion. Despite the humanitarian objectives pursued by the strategy, many political analysts treat Tbilisi’s plan of actions in respect of Sukhum and Tskhinval as a soft attempt to bring back the former territorial integrity.
What is in store for Nabucco?
An annual European gas exhibition has been opened in Vienna. According to member of the board of the Austrian OMV oil-and-gas group of companies Werner Auli, the Azerbaijani and Iranian gas for Nabucco project, which is planned as an alternative of the European gas supplied through the Russian gas pipelines, will, anyway, make it profitable. A key issue at the core of ongoing Russian-Georgian confrontation is a desire of the little Caucasian republic to join North Atlantic Alliance. Russia has always been openly resentful about it. Despite the decision taken at Bucharest summit in 2007 to postpone NATO accession for Russia’s two neighbors – Georgia and Ukraine - leaders of both states cherish their dreams of alliance membership. Though today’s Georgia has almost no pro-Russian politicians and Georgians are not totally disillusioned about NATO security prospects yet, the calls to neutrality become still more audible.
