Road to WTO runs past Tbilisi
Washington openly tells Tbilisi that Georgia’s negotiations with Russia on its membership in the World Trade Organization are no engine for solving Sakartvelo’s political problems. According to Special Assistant to the U.S. President Michael McFaul, now there is a real opportunity to find a productive solution to the dispute concerning WTO without locating the Georgian customs officers in Abkhazia and South Ossetia as Tbilisi insists. Will his words be brought to life on April 28 in the course of another round of arduous negotiations between Russia and Georgia?
Georgian parliament’s superiority complex
It looks like Georgian authorities have set up an objective of gaining a status of the major hell-raiser in the region. As soon as they make friends with anyone, a loud scandal immediately breaks out. Hardly have they mended relations with Israel when a filthy story with the detention of local businessmen happened. Then, all of a sudden, Tel-Aviv openly made friends with Abkhazia. Now Georgian politicians have started threatening Turkey. Indeed, Sakartvelo is failing to gain the reputation of a peacemaker and a regional center of gravity.
Senators checking “reload”
American senators decided to make a tour of the East-European countries to while sorrow about the state budget deficit. While the overseas politicians were struggling with the United States’ domestic problems, they forgot about the states, which, in Washington’s opinion, fall within the range of America’s influence. A visit to Georgia and familiarization with its inner regulations will help them see better into the situation and find out whether the notorious “reload” is lulling Russia. Otherwise, the Senate is going to actively lobby the ABM systems location in Sakartvelo territory.
Military Transit to Nowhere
Georgia has suspended its agreement with Russia on the transit of military equipment and personnel to the military base located in Armenia. The Parliament made this "historical" decision unanimously. 84 deputies present at the meeting said their "yes". In principle, Russia can have a difficult issue: how to send its military equipment and personnel to Armenia. However, actually the agreement has not worked since 2008. An expert of the Moscow Institute of Military and Political Analysis Alexander Khramchikhin spoke about it to the GeorgiaTimes correspondent.2011-04-21 19:30
Georgia did the dirty on the whole Caucasus
The Minister of Defense Bacho Akhalaya managed to convince his Armenian colleague Seyran Oganyan that military co-operation between the two countries should be developed. Not every was glad to hear the news. Armenia is a strategic partner of Russia, and such friendship threatens Georgia with disastrous consequences in the region, when a reshuffle of the political forces in Transcaucasia becomes inevitable. Azerbaijan has been quite loyal to Sakartvelo till now may turn its back to the Caucasian republic: an aggravation of the conflict between Erevan and Baku does not favour peaceful resolution of regional security issues.
