Ruins of Gori
What is life like outside the capital of Georgia? What keeps people inspired and joyful there? Is there anything in common between Mikheil Saakashvili’s endless reports on success in Georgia’s democratic development and real lives of country citizens away from the capital? To answer these questions GeorgiaTimes correspondent went to Gori where simple and wise people live knowing the price of life.
Out of the mouth of Areshidze…
Mamuka Areshidze is, without doubt, the most eminent Georgian conspiracy theorist. Being an «expert in the Caucasus», according his professional biography, Areshidze makes sensational but improbable forecasts quite often. Maybe, in this way he reminds mass media about himself. But one can hardly disagree with his last statement actively cited by Georgian journalists. He said: «I would give independence to Abkhazia immediately». Of course, it is a pity that Areshidze is not the Georgian president. This is a really sensational declaration on the public level for Sakartvelo.
Splendour and poverty of the georgian capital
In the recent years Tbilisi has turned into a European city as good as Western capitals. At least local mass media say it according to the authorities. What is really at the back of the reports of Tbilisi changes: another blague of Saakashvili or real transformation? The GeorgiaTimes correspondent had a stroll along the avenues and streets of Sakartvelo’s heart, dropped in at some bars and shops, admired some ancient churches and new houses. And made his own conclusions.
Vashadze’s guilty curtseys
Swedish FM Carl Bildt met with his Georgian counterpart in Tbilisi voicing the message of European states to the Transcaucasian republic: stop hindering Russia’s entry into WTO. To sweeten nasty words Bildt remarked that Georgia would benefit from it. The EU’s rigidness caused by official Tbilisi’s constant dodgery was understood in Georgia and when the Swedish minister asked why Georgian authorities intended to abandon Geneva talks, Grigol Vashadze was quick to convince him of the opposite. Has Tbilisi outgrown "Mistral"?
Moscow and Paris are close to signing a contract for the purchase of helicopter carriers “Mistral” now more than ever. The parties have already approved the draft document before final signing which must take place on 21 June, according to mass media. The Georgian party which criticized the coming transaction with such zeal last year has taken a pause so far: there is neither reproof nor accusations or appeals to the international community. The GeorgiaTimes correspondent spoke to the head of the Center of Military Forecasting of the Political and Military Analysis Institute Anatoly Tsyganok2011-06-17 13:33
Sakartvelo: he that Is warm thinks all so
The National Bank of Georgia hurries to share joyous news with everybody. The economy that some time ago was literally at the death’s door is rising from the ashes and is demonstrating impressive growth trends. Maybe the tourist season helped the state moneybox so much? Or have investors taken to Sakartvelo planning to "grow money trees" in the area of the rapidly developing Batumi and Kutaisi? I wish they had. It is becoming clear that the increase in the indicators is due just to the iron political will, abrupt liberalization and paranoid anti-corruption activity. However, ordinary citizens have remained poor as church mice, continuing to keep head above water.
