Pre-election race for dear life
Last week turned out to be most eventful in the whole presidential pre-election campaign in Abkhazia. During this period, a scandal burst out around an interview given by Tengiz Kitovani in Sukhum where he accused candidate for presidency Alexander Ankvab of working for the Georgian special services in the Georgian-Abkhaz war. Then followed the heated “postflight debriefing” in the “not-for-the-press” mode both in Parliament and in the administration of the head of the republic. The end was dramatic: Sergey Shamba got into an accident.
Georgia exporting death
People continue dying in over-stuffed Georgian prisons. 26 people died in the first quarter of last year, the figure having reached 38 people now. No wonder: according to independent reports, prisoners are treated brutally. People’s Defender Giorgy Tugushi has been trying to draw the authorities’ attention to the problem for several months but his attempts shatter against the thick shell of Mikhail Saakashvili’s police regime.
Mishiko’s repressive democracy
What rules today’s Georgia? “Democracy!” – will be a cheerful reply of the accomplices of freedom loving Saakashvili who expetly combines the rule of the people and bloody dispersions of demonstrations. Yet, this “democracy” reminds a dinner painted on a canvas in Papa Carlo’s little room. Nestan Kirtadze, international secretary of the Labor Party, gave it a wonderful description calling Georgia’s political system “repressive democracy”. Ruslan Harabua, an expert at the Institute of CIS Countries, explains topicality of this term to GeorgiaTimes correspondent.2011-08-23 20:20
Saakashvili grabs a newspaper
Georgia is still trying to gain from the media war between the West and the Russian Federation. Though global community acknowledged falseness of a number of interpretations of the events, Tbilisi keeps writing. Today the Caucasian republic insolently asserts that Georgia was struggling against Moscow on TV channels and newspaper pages and lost only for the insufficiency of political weight. Yet, Mikheil Saakashvili’s “envoys” are sure they will win. Who is the target audience of this propaganda?
