Saakashvili sells native land
The government of Georgia keeps raising funds to finance its mega-important projects. Apparently, Boers from South Africa, invited to revive the country’s agriculture, won’t be enough. Papuna Davitaya, minister for diaspora issues, is now on an official visit to the Republic of South Africa to see whether all arrangements are met and that the real rate of economy revival is in line with national statistics data. But even if now the land will be transferred to foreigners what will Georgians do? The government of Sakartvelo doesn’t look ready to give a reply.
Mishiko exchanging armour for tourists
President of Sakartvelo Mikhail Saakashvili admitted at last that he actually needs Russia very much, or rather, he needs Russian people. It appears that Mishiko is not very lucky with European tourists; otherwise, why would he say that Georgia is exceedingly interested in guests from the “vicious”, “alien” and “terrible” Russia? Well, the Georgian leader’s feeble attempts to open eyes to reality may only be welcomed.
“Electric shock” to democracy
A new blow was delivered at the Georgian law-enforcement authorities’ reputation. According to the Association of Young Lawyers of Georgia non-government organization, there is every ground to believe that during the protest action break-up on the night of May 26 one of the people died not because of electric shock as the official statement goes but was killed by policemen. Of course, security officials do not listen to NGO’s conclusions but it does not change the fact: Nika Kvintradze was “handled” by law enforcers.
Georgia stops banking
The Bankers Association of Georgia should not have repeated that the financial sector is viable and stable. It was like putting an evil eye on it. Despite the desire of the country’s national bank to get listed on London Stock Exchange, one of the financial giants – HSBC – is leaving Tbilisi. This strategic decision is connected with the fact that the British group has failed to make enough progress to provide normal functioning. At the same time, cunning Englishmen decided to merge Georgia’s main bank and won’t end up losing.
Unemployed Georgians fed with statistics
Unemployment is disastrous in Georgia. While the government keeps making believe that the unemployed are “only” sixteen percent, more than a half of Sakartvelo citizens are thinking where to get money for a living. In order not to mar the statistics, the authorities are ready to rank everyone as “employed” – a peasant on his plot and a beggar gathering bottles. Economic expert Giorgy Khukhashvili shared his opinion on the situation with GeorgiaTimes.2011-09-09 11:33
Myths and legends of Georgian analysts
Mamuka Areshidze, a well-known politologist (Georgia), quite frequently comments on events in Abkhazia claiming that the country will face a “severe autumn and winter”. His remarks are less biased, but myths are still alive. We decided to take a thorough look at “Moscow’s factor” in Abkhaz politics that the authorities in Tbilisi wrap in all sorts of legends and stories. We also want to see how severe the coming political season will be in Abkhazia.
Mishiko the great, conqueror of Barbarians
Despite ceaseless criticism of Russia for its “imperial” and “neo-colonial” aspirations, the Georgian authorities dream of creating their own mini-empire from the Black to the Caspian Sea. Systematic work is done in this direction as we see from recognition of genocide of Circassians and fruitless attempts to set up a Caucasian confederation. Yet, it takes much more than just a coincidence of economic interests and historical falsifications to build an empire. There has to be a legend, mythology of succession of great empires of the past. Caucasian information portal has made another attempt to invent alternative history.
