Abkhazia on the way to development strategy2009-04-14 12:47
Abkhaz authorities are seriously planning to attract investments into the republic. International conference «Independent Abkhazia: In search of Economic Strategy» has just finished in Sukhum.
"We want the world community to see our country as a reliable, responsible and prospective economic partner; - Sergey Bagapsh's speech was presented by the government press service. - I would like to thank participants of the conference for their help in elaboration of the economic development strategy for the recently recognized state that pulled out of the war and economic blockade comparatively a short time ago". According to him the republic has many problems but the government is seeking solutions in order to fulfill strong economic potential and foster investments. "In a vacuum and without regard to accumulated international experience, without interaction with other countries it will be very hard to overcome difficulties - impossible in some cases", -
the Abkhaz leader summed up.
The forum participants have acknowledged that after 15 years of wars, blockades and struggle for recognition the republic must rise. The round table sessions on "Strategic directions of economic development of the republic of Abkhazia", "Accelerated development of travel industry" and "Development of transport and energy infrastructure, communications and media environment of Abkhazia" were quite productive, Ossetian radio report.
In follow-up of the conference the statement was adopted stipulating inter alia: "In order to accelerate Abkhazia's economic growth it is most important to concentrate all efforts on development of modern credit and financial system, construction technologies, communication systems affordable for the population, information technologies and transport infrastructure. This will ensure successful implementation of the economic strategy and preservation of economic sovereignty".
According to the conferees the most lucrative sectors for attracting investments to Abkhazia are travel industry, agriculture, exploitation of mineral resources, electric-power industry and fishing industry.
Indeed with all these opportunities, with all natural resources and potential for recreation sector development Abkhazia is still virtually isolated first of all because of politics, i.e. the European Union's indulgence of Georgia's territorial ambitions. Now such a blockade is taken calmly in Sukhum: there is Russia, a reliable partner and a friend.
