Georgian Foreign Ministry finds a pretext2009-04-14 15:13
Against the background of protest actions in the Georgian capital the Foreign Ministry makes a fuss over maneuvers of Russian ships in the Black Sea. Official Tbilisi calls Moscow's actions a provocation.
"Presently Russian combat ships are located in close proximity to Georgia in the Black Sea basin; - the statement is presented by Civil.ge. - Flights of various combat and troop-carrying aircrafts from aerodromes near Georgia are expected. The Russian side has intensified its military potential on the occupied Georgian territories. Such actions are extremely aggravating the situation".
Foreign Minister Grigol Vashadze was more "specific" about official Tbilisi's concern: "Russian 58th Army is put on full combat alert, the army field strength in Abkhazia and South Ossetia is increased, especially in Gali district, three troop-carrying ships sailed out of Sevastopol and other three ships are ready to be out, - Res IA quotes the minister. - Moscow is getting prepared for the development of political situation in Georgia according to the plan suitable for it in order to be ready to take advantage of this situation. This reconfirms our apprehensions that Russia has never thought of ceasing aggression against Georgia". Vashadze also called on international community to use political and diplomatic levers to prevent escalation of tension and
"possible provocations from Russia". For this Vashadze had a meeting with the EU Special Envoy Peter Semneby and Czech Ambassador Ivan Jestřáb.
The replies of European diplomats were not reported. However the indignation with the actions of Russia started to grow like a snowball reaching the climax in Georgia's state minister for reintegration Temur Yakobashvili's speech: "Russia is trying to use the protest actions in Georgia for escalation of tension on the country's administrative borders in order to justify its subsequent aggression by the status of a peacekeeper, - Rosbalt informs. - Certainly they are waiting for developments in Georgia and as soon there are signs of instability I think they will surely try to use the situation".
Russian Defense Ministry reacted calmly to the fuss of April 11. According to the Ministry Spokesman the reports on the 58th Army advance alert status are contrary to fact. "Units and subunits are undergoing regular checkup following the end of the winter training period, - VZGLYAD quotes his statement. - Servicemen are on a normal duty".
Another disproof was presented the next day.
