Once upon a time in Caucasian Georgia…2009-04-16 17:59
Ex Defense Minister Irakli Okruashvili has not arrived yet and the massacre in Tbilisi streets has already begun. Last night three more protestors, a businessman and a singer were assaulted. The rights defenders are beating the alarm with the Interior Ministry pretending to investigate the incidents.
Unknown persons in "cool" cars violently attacked People's Party, Freedom Party and Alliance for Georgia members Gizo Sartania, Hamlet Gulordava and Maklhaz Charkviani. According to Georgian media they were taken to the Republican Hospital. As Gizo told near Avlabari metro station from where the oppositionists had been going to Rustaveli Avenue they had been assaulted by people that had arrived in three cars - two Mercedeces and a Toyota. "We were beaten in the head, I was forced to the ground and beaten with feet", - Gizo stated. According to Hamlet Gulordava the assaulters were armed. He assures they were Interior Ministry officers and claims to be able to identify them. As specified by Teya Tlashadze of Movement for United Georgia earlier the victims were
in charge of agitation in Zugdidi and were threatened with a punishment then.
"Uncatchable avengers" were quite merciless with Vakhtang Lagidze, Director General of Coca Cola Bottlers Georgia. According to his wife Maka Tavamaishvili her husband was attacked in Chavchavadze Avenue on his way back from the protest action last night. He was violently beaten and his car was stolen. He was taken to hospital too. The criminal case was initiated over the incident.
Another victim of masked people was Zurab Mandzhavidze, a singer who had taken part in the rally in front of the Public TV building. He was driving back home with his brothers. Near School № 1 in Lesya Ukrainka Street, their way was blocked by a Golf with a state registration plate and a BMW with ten people jumping out of them and breaking Zurab's car windows in an attempt to open the doors. The singer was beaten with batons and who knows how all this could have ended if some people had not come running to the noise. The attackers immediately withdrew.
The organizers of the opposition rally calculated that since April 9 20 people had been beaten, 2 persons had been injured with knife. No case has been uncovered, the protestors' press center reported. Some of the reports were disproved. The incident near Avlabari residence resulting in two persons being injured with knife was recorded by the Interior Ministry monitoring cameras.
As the ministry states the protestors allegedly had a fight between them. A criminal case was initiated on the fact above in the Interior Department of Stary Tbilisi district.
