OSCE suggested formal actions instead of the brigand ones2009-04-22 20:54
The situation on the border of Georgia and South Ossetia is again intensified. This time the blame was cast on the OSCE observers detained on April, 21 by the Ossetian border guards. Naturally, on receiving an appropriate lecture the trespassers were released. However, Tbilisi and OSCE are thundering.
"The OSCE observers have unlawfully crossed the border with South Ossetia in the region of Tskhinvali by car and have been detained", - BBC is quoting Eduard Kokoity, the President of the Republic. The South-Ossetian leader has pointed out that the OSCE observers' actions again can be characterized as provocative. According to one of the South-Ossetian MIA officials, before detention, the South-Ossetian border guards asked the OSCE representatives to leave the territory of the Republic and even made a warning shot into the air. "However, they ignored this warning", - ITAR-TASS is quoting him.
The detained officials of the peace-supporting mission, Turan Yldirim and Robert Lambert, the citizens of Turkey and Hungary, had a conversation with Boris Chochiev, the President's envoy for the post-conflict settlement issues. The observers admitted that they intended to speak to the South-Ossetian representatives at the border outpost. Chochiev himself gave the following opinion of the incident: "If OSCE wants to work in the territory of South Ossetia, we have our MFA, - "Rosbalt" is quoting him. - Such methods remind those of brigands. We do not want any acts of provocation. For us, OSCE is an organization, which we would like to question on many issues, and every act of such kind is going to be cut short". According to Chochiev, the OSCE's reputation in the world has already been exploded by its passivity last August, and such actions are unnecessary. "South Ossetia has more than once declared at the summit level its determination to discuss the issue of further cooperation with OSCE. Yet, instead of working on in the context of this proposition and today reality, OBSE would perform such provocative acts", - he summed up.
It is interesting to mention that the observers themselves refused to give any comments to the media. However, the floor was taken by Marta Freeman, an official OSCE representative. According to «KP.ru», she said that OSCE will continue "thorough investigation" of the situation concerning the detention of its officials.
Naturally, this statement provokes a question: is there anything to investigate, after all? According to South-Ossetian MIA, the mission representatives did not respond even to the warning shots. Was their desire to get to South Ossetia and prove to its government the necessity of the OSCE mission's presence that strong? One can hardly believe that.
